    Chromebook recommendations

Looking to get a chromebook for my kids to use. These are totally new to me. Stopped at Best Buy but could not get much help there. Looking to keep this under $400. Any input would be appreciated.

A great Chromebook costs far less than a Windows laptop, and it can easily accomplish most school or work tasks.

    Dell in your ballpark.

Just picked up an Acer Chromebook 14 on Amazon http://tinyurl.com/gs88fl7 I got it for $260 on sale. Look around beside Amazon since the price went up a bit. Bought it in November, so far I like it a lot.

My wife and son both have Chromebooks. They work O.K. for internet browsing, shopping, facebook, E-Mail etc. After 2 years they haven't had any issues at all with viruses or anything else. On the other hand, for some things, they don't work well. You still need at least one Windows or Mac computer in the house.

Thanks for the input. I'm liking the Acer 15, saw it in person at Best Buy but they are sold out. I see it on Amazon for $229. Any need to spend extra for 32 GB HD or the i3 processor?

you will be happier with the i3, no real need for the 32gb hd unless you plan on saving a lot of pics and stuff.

The 15 uses a 3502U which is a dual-core processor released Q1'15 while the 14 comes equipped with an N3160 quad-core released Q1'16. I own the 14 and every little bit of performance is a bonus in these low power laptops, though I think it is kinda fun to do more with less. I find the aluminum body easier to keep clean than those made of plastic and 1080p in a 14" monitor has more pixel density than that of a 15". If your kids are going to use this in a classroom a 15.6" screen can be awkward to use on a desk if they need access to a notebook and other supplies, while an 11.3" is perfect, and a 14" is doable. That's my experience looking at Powerpoint presentations while taking notes.

                    Look up crouton
Running Linux on the chrome book.

I grabbed an Acer last year for 100 .. just barely opened it up.. the chrome book is useless to me. But the wife likes it. And when I need to do something I'll just run Linux in a shell and have a normal computer experience.
