A few years ago I would say yes. I've built custom multicopters since 2011 and DSMx and DSM2 were the most popular (anecdotally) amongst hobbiests. DJI, who had pretty much run away with the mid and low level market (IMHO where a few bad apples have ruined the bunch) use a proprietary protocol. In fact an early Phantom mod was to swap out the Phantom receiver with a DSMx receiver so you could use a "real" transmitter (with additional functionality) instead of DJI's "toy" Tx.

I've been out of the loop for awhile so I'm not sure of DJI's tech now. But I'm assuming theyre still developing their own tech instead of using DSMx from Spectrum and the clones.

Happy to be corrected if things have evolved.
