    Mechanical qurstion about asus router

I have an asus dark knight or black knight router thats about two years old. Its been flawless. I think ive had to reset it once in the two years its been up.

Today, my ipad wont hook up so i went to do a manual reset.

I reset the cable modem, but the router appeared dead, all lights off.

I verified the connections, and noticed the power button was "out". Its one of those push it once, it pops out, and is off, push it again, it gives a slight click and stays in and is on. It will depress but not stay in. No audible or tactile clicking to keep it in.

But wait, theres more. As im playing with it, i realize the lights come on when i press it in, but since the button wont stay in, they go right back out when i let go.

So i tape the button down, and, sure enough, the lights cycle and the ipad hooks up. But of course the scotch tape lasted about a minute

So now ive gorilla taped the button down, and it appears to be a decent interim fix. Im not covering any of the vents or ports, i only used a half width of the tape, but i decided solicit opinions about the safety of this as a short term solution, say until the weekend to replace it?

    Thanks.

No worries CG87. You are good to go.

Here is a video of how to fix it, though I will say I would look for a replacement component instead of doing this. The music is awful. Apparently the power switch failure on this thing is common.

If you know how to solder, you can remove the switch and replace it with this toggle. From what I read it is a direct drop in replacement, with a slight modification:

From the comments in the video above it states, "If you have any experience with desoldering/soldering I strongly recommend doing this as this particular toggle lines up PERFECTLY with the original power button hole. You just have to cut one of the two grounding pins off the frame of the new switch and I added a small wire to the second ground pin on the board because the original switch was grounded at the front and back of the switch. Just got it all back up and working today!"

Another option would be to just add wires across the proper contacts and hardwire it to the "ON" position. Who needs a switch on a router anyway?

next time just pull the power cord out. i never had a router with a switch on it like that. more stupid things on it the bigger chance of something going wrong.

The button just failed, i hadnt used it since i turned it on. Seems like a really bad design.

I had a router with that type of power button do the same exact think. I just opened the case and soldered a bridge across the buttons contacts. That fixed it.
