    N+ cert

Anyone here N+ or network certified? I'm taking A+ and N+ at the same time at a local college. Didn't realize how much I didn't know about networking pretty steep learning curve.

Still trying to remember things like the 7 OSI layers and how frequency modulation and TCP/IP protocols.

Yeah, that's a lot at once if your newish to IT. And of course you don't use 50% of it.

My college course is making me retake a+ ya college. It's over 5 years so they want it updated.

It's the layer 8 errors that cause the most issues, OR lying regarding the layer 8 issues of not rebooting before calling IT that are the biggest waste of time.

The worst thing about all these new fan-danged M$ OS variants is that they say they have no internet connection, when they do... and Windows updates fail to update on a clean install to get fixes for a shoddy OS that should work OOTB. This doesn't help all the people new to the trade... at all.

Home Editions (or Win Me OR Vista), never had a place in my "home".

Haha, no joke. I always refer to it as layer 0 though. User error is extremely commonplace.

OP, some advice from somebody with years of experience in IT. I wouldn't waste your time with the Network+ cert. You'll get much better results and far more opportunities with a CCNA, and if you have any amount of networking knowledge, it's really not too difficult. Probably 90% of the network engineer jobs I've seen posted list a CCNA as preferred, and a very minimal amount mention N+. I've had a couple network engineer gigs the past few years and my CCNA is what got me in the door each time (along with my experience). Once I finish my Microsoft cert and VMware VCP5-DCV cert, I'll be working on my CCNP.

You can Google for a Packet Tracer download, which is the best way to practice Cisco networking if you don't have access to live equipment. It's what I used to study.

Believe me, you'll be much better off.

I have a few. Make sure to learn the TCP/IP Model Layers and how it compares to the OSI Layers.
