Time to make a decision

3 more days left to upgrade to Windows 10. My desktop already migrated. My laptop is still running Windows 7.

Should I keep the 3-4 year old laptop running Win 7 and just buy another Dell Inspiron 5000 15" with Windows 10 preloaded?

My issue then becomes one of licenses. I have only 2 for my Adobe Master Collection CS6 and Microsoft Office Professional 2010. I would have to buy another license or disable and migrate.

I understand I can migrate to Windows 10 and still run Windows 7. Is that true? If so I'll download then just run 7 until they stop updates.

What is the general consensus? what would you do?

I voted for upgrade to 10.

Windows 10 isn't bad at all. It feels more like 7 than it does 8 or 8.1

Depending on what you use your computer for, you'll actually see some real world performance increase with the same hardware.

As far as licenses, you should be able to keep using it on Windows 10, assuming it's a legit copy of Windows 10.

Oh and MS Office may be a different story.

I know MS wants everyone to pay monthly or annually for full Office Suite. I believe they have a student suite with just Word and/or Powerpoint that you can pay a one time lump sum for.

I get ALL of my software at Teacher/Student discount rate from places like the Academic Super Store. My Adobe Master Collection CS6 2010 had a list price of $2,800 and I bought it for $699, a two license, one for the laptop and one for the desktop. My price for Microsoft Office Professional 2016 is $29.99

I am not sure why people have problems with W10, whether it is installation or privacy. I never had any problems installing W10 even on my almost 10 year old laptop and as far as privacy Microsoft doesn't collect any more information then Google or Apple.
In a few days the anniversary addition should be available for download which should make W10 even better.

you can upgrade the system than roll it back to windows. when you are ready to go to 10 go back. i have a few boxes i am keeping windows 7 on because i use wmc. the rest is using 10.

I have machines with Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, plan on keeping them configured that way as "legacy" machines in case our overlords at microsoft decide to start getting cute and disabling support or features. Just put them on their own "ecosystem" that is separate from your main "modern" machines.

Too bad that TechNet Plus's old subscription isn't offered anymore, or you'd have 10 of everything (10*x86, AND 10*AMD64), for one yearly fee.

I'm not sure what people's problems with Win 10 is, other than I know some people who are power users have driver issues. For regular folk, Win 10, IMO at least, is win 7, just with some of Win 8's UI tacked on.

Win 8 was kind of a disaster (even though I didn't have a problem with it for simple usage, like on a tablet PC). I could see why people hated that. I'm not sure why anyone dislikes 10 because it's basically MS's mea culpa going back to traditional windows like 7.

In any case, my vote would have been, do a disc image, save it, do the update and if you don't like win 10, go back to 7 using your disc image. At least then you would have had the option to going to 10 in the future if you changed your mind or at the point win 7 support was ended.

Win 10 crashed a lot and hardware issues for older equipment. To me it was basically Windows ME 3. Got tired of it and switched to ubuntu. I left one older laptop on windows 8 and haven't really used it after 7/29. I hope that since it's past the 7/29 deadline, it will stop pushing me to install windows 10.

I have upgraded 5 different laptops and PC's (1 Asus tablet, 1 new Dell PC, an 5 year old Dell laptop, an new HP laptop and a 10 year old Dell PC that started out way back when with Vista) and they all run 10 as well as they did 7 or 8.1.

I have not had one issue. But then I'm just using these PC's for basic word processing, business programs, basic photo/movie editing, etc.

I know people with very specific driver set ups are hating 10 due to the incompatibilities. I think for the 95% of the regular PC users, Win 10 is as good as 7. At least from what I've seen so far. I have had nothing to complain about.
