use another program. you can always go back to windows 7 as well. do you have amazon prime? they let you back up music and photos i believe unlimited. google music lets you uplaod i think its like 20000 songs.

your best bet one way or another is to keep a back up. i think everyone should ahve a NAS where you can back up all the data on a central location in the house.

You can get 3rd party software for W10 instead of Windows media player, a lot are freebies, i. e. DVD shrink, DVD rip, several cd rippers and I use Free VLC media player.

I like Foobar 2000 for a free music player and VLC for a free video player. Both are rather plain looking but handle far more formats than Windows media Player and both are lightweight, fast and free.

For a very full featured music player I like MediaMonkey. The free version is enough for most people and the pay version has everything anyone is likely to need from an audio player except multi-drive batch ripping.

MediaMonkey is the award-winning media organizer and player for serious collectors. It cleans the mess in your music and video libraries, and lets you share and enjoy them across all your devices.

Ripping large collections of CDs is best done with the full-featured version of dbpoweramp and its batch ripper. It rips, tags, and files your music to your specifications almost as fast as you can load the discs. It's not free but if you have a large collection it'll save you hours.

dBpoweramp: mp3 converter, FLAC, WAV, AAC and Apple Losslesss. CD Ripper, Album Art, Asset UPnP Server, Image Converter, Video Converter, PerfectTUNES, AccurateRip

I'll be keeping 1 or 2 computers with windows 7. I'll likely just buy a new laptop with windows 10 already loaded.

No disrespect, but in my experience from 15 years as a tech this sounds like a training issue and not a technical or application issue. MediaMonkey will only make multiple copies if you have it make multiple copies, and Windows needs to know what files you want what player to use for that file type. You'll go into VLC and tell it what file types you want it to play. You'll then do the same with your audio player. If you don't then they will both be trying to become the default player for all types of media.
