How to remove the 'dock' from an ipad?

Anyone know how to remove the dock area from an ipad? Or perhaps even just make it a black bar. Right now I don't have any apps on it and it's this big grey bar taking up 20% of the screen:

I like my Mac, but I don't think I would ever get another ipad. Battery power is great and so is the retina screen, but the software stinks. I suspect there's a Samsung tablet with similar specs for half the price...

So, what would you put there instead?

Jailbreak is the only way I know of. You're only looking at apps on the homepage anyways.

After I jailbreak, can I un-jailbreak it? Or is it forever an orphan OS after that?

Nothing. In the best case scenario, it would just be merged into the rest of the screen rather than treated as a special area.

To un-jailbreak you would need to restore your device. I used to jailbreak a lot back when the iPhone 5 first came out. Back then there were always chances of the phone bricking itself and never working again. Also, it allows hackers to access your phone much easier than the factory iOS. I believe in the last few months there was a huge data breech of people with jailbroken phones.

'Don't see why you're bothering to do that. I put my most frequently used apps in that bar. Mail, Messaging, Google Maps, and my Sonos app. The rest of the screen is primarily folders that group the rest of my apps appropriately. Utilities, Video, Audio, etc.

As for the operating system, I don't know of a better one. Apple software is generally pretty darn brilliant.
