ipad mini 2 requires 'passcode' after IOS update!

So it looks like Apple has rendered my ipad mini useless. I installed the most recent IOS update since it kept popping up.

Upon reboot it had the "hello / hola" welcome screen and swipe area. Swiped - it's requesting a 4-digit PIN! There was no PIN assigned before.

WTH?! It seems to be a common problem.

Only remedy is to wipe the device?

That happened to my girlfriend with her iPhone, she has to wipe the phone and do a factory reset. Apple support told her their was nothing they could do.

FBI and DOJ are really going to be pissed now!!

My older iPad did the same thing ,but I had a lock code enabled.

I don't know why Apple does these things.

Looks like a job for the Geeks.....Ah Geniuses.

        Is your stuff backed up?

If so, can't you reset and then sign in, plug it in and go to bed?

If you were smart you'd have backed it up first before an OS upgrade. Wouldn't be an issue.

my boss had his wife's ipad and iphone both suffer from that problem, as well as a co-worker's ipad as well. had to wipe and restore to get them working again.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

I hate that Apple does stuff like this.

Is it backed up on iTunes?

I have had a lot of problems with IOS updates on various devices over the years. Going from IOS 7 to IOS 8 and then 9 rendered my Ipad 2 useless - OS 8 and OS 9 demanded too many resources that the old iPad could not give, so Safari just constantly crashed even after complete device wipes and fresh installs, and the UI was painfully slow. I have had other problems similar to OP.

And of course there is no easy way to rollback to the previous OS if you find there is a problem - and even if you ever did want to rollback you need 3rd party tools and you needed to save your blobs well in advance. It is a joke.

So now I never update unless there is a compelling reason to do so. The popup that appears asking me to update is not a compelling reason.

If you do plan to update, consider these tips BEFORE doing it:
                • Disable the password for device lock
                • Disable restrictions if you have them enabled
                • Be sure the restriction to delete apps is turned off - best to just disable all restrictions
                • Close all open apps
                • Disable 'Find my iPad/iPhone'
                • Reboot (not just power off) the device
                • Power it back up and THEN do the device backup to iTunes on your PC
                • Proceed with upgrade
                • Re-enable your passcode and any restrictions after the upgrade is complete

Have you tried the backdoor passcode bypass?

It works on my iphone 6.
