I never liked how it had an always running component.

ROFL, I don't even use Quicktime on my Mac! And anything Apple tends to come with a log of baggage when installed on a PC (eg. iTunes)

...which is why I never bought an iPhone.

My son might want one, but he'll have to pay for it himself if that is his desire. I won't give Apple a dime of my money.

As I understand it iTunes has not needed QT for awhile.

My Adobe video editor requires quicktime to be able to open and edit mp4 files, which are what comes off my GoPro. But quicktime for Windows 10 doesn't exist, so I have a patched up aftermarket version I use. I haven't cared enough to continue research to see if I have a better option, but I am familiar with and enjoy using Premiere Elements, but don't do enough editing to warrant learning something else.
