Hey all. So I was going through the pictures on my camera today, only to realize that I haven't backed ANY of them up off my SD card onto my computer, and therefore, they are not stored anywhere else. Got me thinking about cloud storage. I fell upon the My Cloud and hot swappable My Cloud NAS. I was wondering if anyone had any experience, positive or negative, about either of these devices. I'm fairly technically proficient but I've never personally used either of these and they carry a nice little price tag to try out and end up hating.

Well that's a good advice to save them in the cloud. For me if you don't really care about privacy then it should be okay. Now when it comes down to documents I would encrypt them that way no one has access to them just yourself or anyone you want. Just remember password for those files because once you encrypt them it will be impossible to open the file unless you have a super computer.Comment

Well right now I'm using Google Drive for pictures but I'm running out of free space. I don't have Amazon Prime, because I'm stingy and most stuff gets free shipping anyway, just not two day.
One of the other reasons I'd kinda like to use a system like My Cloud or another NAS device is that I can back up an image of all the computers we use in our house for easy recovery/re-install.Dear ISIS, Texas is not known for their gun free zones.

I have a wd mycloud and love it. Keep all my business stuff and personal stuff backed up on it. I also have all my kids movies on it so they can stream them off the cloud to all our tv's and devices. I can even remote access the stuff when I am out of the house and need business documents that are stored on it. The only downside is the cloud uses a hard drive so its good practice to have another external hard drive attached for backups of the cloud. I spent about $125 for a 3tb my cloud and then $70 for the external drive to attach to it for backups. Not bad for a mini server that streams.
Another downside to the mycloud is that all folders and files are accessible to anyone on the network. (Your home or office network) So if you have stuff for your eyes only you need to encrypt the folder. Create the encrypted folder on your desktop than you can drag in drop it through the Mycloud in the network folder under my comupter.
They set the software up to us a program to access the cloud which they can restrict access through but If you know what you are doing and access the cloud through my computer than networks all the folders and files are there for anyone to see
In my opinion for $200 for a setup that can be used as a server, and stream I think it's a great buy. * The mynotebook does not have the same options and capabilities as the mycloudLast edited by jbolton; 02-11-2016, 10:55 AM.sigpicComment

I kinda figured everyone on the network would be able to see anything put on there. I can accept that level of risk since I won't be putting any sensitive documents on it. Mostly pictures, although streaming movies to my TV would be rather handy. I was also looking at the one with hot swappable hard drives. Run RAID 1 between the two and have a third drive plugged in (Smaller, SSD maybe?) specifically for "factory" images of each computer, complete with drivers and such.Dear ISIS, Texas is not known for their gun free zones.

Yes but the one that can swap out hard drives. I can do it with mine but it requires re writing the programming software.I kinda figured everyone on the network would be able to see anything put on there. That's the one I would get.http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I2P82CS/...ing=UTF8&psc=1
This is specifically the one I was looking at.
I have this one and it doesn't allow swapping out drives without reprogramming.

I was looking at that too but I like the flexibility of swapping drives back and fourth, especially since I have had drives fail on me before.Dear ISIS, Texas is not known for their gun free zones.

I also use a NAS; Synology. A lot of user flexibility and configuration. Plus they have great customer service.
Good read for NAS': http://www.cnet.com/topics/storage/b...ached-storage/Comment

If you have an .edu email that is still active, storage through that Google drive account is unlimited with file sizes up to 5TB.Comment

Unfortunately, I have no .edu account so that's not possible.
I've been looking at the 4 bay ones and the inner nerd in me gets super excited and wants to set up RAID 5 and how awesome it would be, but then I return to earth and realize that RAID 1 would be sufficient and more cost effective.
What do you guys think? Enable my inner nerd or just go RAID 5 on my desktop with SSD's
