Your mailbox wont be encrypted though.
pgp encrypts individual messages with the senders public key, while others use your public key to send encrypted messages to you.

There is no guarantee every message you receive will be encrypted and the people you communicate with will likely not buy in to this, which is why it's not in widespread use.

It's best to use a mail application if you're truly concerned about privacy, although I think you can use a browser plugin to work with webmail. For the most part though you're pretty much wasting your time.

You don't encrypt your mailbox with pgp. You encrypt messages with pgp.

That being said, I use Google Mail to MX my personal domain email now. It's easier for me if I switch web hosting providers for my domain. Keeps my email online even though I move my website.

Not a white paper, but they're encrypting each message as it comes in, not the entire mailbox. Decrypting and encrypting your entire mailbox file every time a messages is received or you access your mailbox (e.g. IMAP) would be too much overhead.

The only effective way to do that is to run your own email server and encrypt either your home directory, or even better, the entire email server. If this is an option for you, I would suggest Linux with LUKS whole-disk encryption. It's now very easy to set up this encryption with CentOS 7 during installation.

If you wish to avoid the snooping eyes of Google, Yahoo, and Facebook then almost any other provider will be an improvement. I'm sure you understand that any illegal behavior will be found out no matter how "secure" your email might be. But if you want to raise the bar and attempt to operate with some privacy from the marketing gods than protonmail looks fine.

But here's an article that shows it's not always fine. To my point, any motivated attacker with skills and time can find a way to defeat a web server.

The latest encrypted email service to rise in popularity is ProtonMail, which attracted wide attention after it was featured on Mr. Robot. But how secure is it really?

I've also heard of another secure email service called Clintonmail.com But I've not checked it out yet.
