Best / Cheapest way to get internet and phone service

AT&T just charged my parents 88.00 for uverse and phone service. up from 56.00. It's 6mps on the internet.
Is the best / easiest / cheapest way just to just cancel the phone and go VOIP? I think their internet is 45.00 and Wally World Has phone for 10 bucks a month. It's in the Chico area if that makes a difference.

    Thanks

How is your parents health? Do you want to rely on VOIP in an emergency?

Sonic.net is a monthly service but based in Santa Rosa.

AT&T Internet has been slow, we switched parents to Comcast package and it's way faster.

Might want to look into Google voice. Can buy an adapter to make it work with home phones.

After that it's pretty much free. It runs off the Internet.

It's free to get a number. If you want to keep their existing landline number you have to jump through hoops but it is possible.

Then you just have to pay for Internet. But yeah, no e911.

magic jacks actually work. I use one and I set my parents up with one. Bought them five years of phone service on top of the one that came with the device and ported their number for them....

They're the cheapest phone service I am aware of... even cheaper than normal sip providers (magic jack is a sip provider but they like to hide it behind their own hardware)...

Always bundle to get the biggest discount. Shop around for the deals and always cancel service when the promotion is over. Let them know you will stay a customer if they offer a good promotion.

never had magic jack though most people i have seen who has had both claim ooma has better voice quality.

does magic jack have a stand alone device where you dont need the computer on to get calls?

yeah; they finally do. Ethernet in and phone jack out.

If you disconnect your house from the telephone pole (easy; phone box on the side of the house); you can plug the phone jack out from the magic jack into your home phone jack and all the phones in the house will work off it (if they are ac powered; otherwise not enough power from mj to ring them all). Or you can just plug a single regular phone into it (powered or not powered).
