Fairly basic home network questions-new wireless modem/router

I have time Warner cable internet.

For a couple years, I've had their modem feeding a wireless router via cat5, with another line going to the main TV room, feeding a wireless hotspot.

The main router is an asus "dark knight", the other one I got off amazon, using it as a switch for various devices and as a wireless signal booster. I'll update the thread when I find what it is.

I'm totally happy with the setup, Netflix runs perfectly with a hardwire link, the desktop works upstairs wirelessly.

Wireless devices work all over the house.

So, naturally, time Warner decided to mandate a new modem to permit much faster speeds. It's a ubee ddw36c.

Here's the rub. The new modem is also a wireless router. My suspicion is, it's probably not as good as mine, but what does this mean for my asus, network, the wireless extender, etc?

Is there a way to use it as just a modem, and still use my router?

Or should I put the dark knight where the range extender router is now, and get even more backyard coverage?

You can disable the wireless radio part of your new router and continue to use your old setup if you happy.

Agree with jviz4u above. If it was mine, I would turn off the wireless on the new ubee device and use what you had before... assuming you like what you had which it appears you do.
Here is a link to help you do that http://www.ubeeinteractive.com/servi...e-warner-cable for me it was on the 2nd page.
Hope I am not breaking any rules with the link, if so, apologies.

Research bridge mode for the modem/router combo. It's normally a hidden setting and will make it function just like a modem.

Does that sound right? My year old $200 extended range, three antenna asus should be better than a no external antenna cable company do it all, right?

The new wireless modem might be worth trying out first. When we were mandated to upgrade to Uverse from regular DSL in our area, the new modem / router ATT sent me seemed to provide a wider wireless footprint than my 3 year old Linksys. Overall speed is faster too, but I suspect that was because of the Uverse upgrade.

Fairly basic home network questions-new wireless modem/router

Or you could buy your own cable modem and stop paying time warner a monthly fee for an inferior modem.

I installed my own Motorola surfboard modem.

That way your cable modem is just that, and your high performance router acts as the router and wireless gateway. The cable modem is in bridge mode.

Most vendor provided modem router gateways are cheap and bad performers due to the cost factor across 0000s of units.
