    Which one do you have?

I only just found out that the reason why my internet is so slow is because I've still been using 802.11n. I didn't know before that 802.11ac is the better one and that I should be upgrading to that.
So what do you use? Do you use 802.11g, 802.11n, or 802.11ac?

Don't blame your endpoint to WiFi access point connection unless you're hitting your WAP/router to Internet connection speed is faster.

But this is my 802.11n connection speed at work:

Not all of our APs support AC, but I think we have one in the test lab in our building. Granted, my wireless interface doesn't support AC.

802.11ac is great for transferring files within your network but is unlikely to be your bottleneck unless you have a super fast internet connection or all of your neighbors are on the same wifi channel. Since you didn't say how fast your internet connection is then there isn't anything anybody here an do other than make guesses about where the problem is.

Way too many factors in wireless networking technology for a blanket statement such as "My 802.11n is slow, I should get 802.11ac which is instantly faster." I manage enterprise size wireless systems for several school districts my company manages and not one of them is utilizing 802.11ac yet, partly due to cost, but partly due to the fact the standard is not yet mature and still a "draft" standard. Slow wireless performance could be due to many factors, such as your equipment, the receivers in your devices, environmental interference, distance from transmitter, etc.

One thing you need to realize is 802.11n supports multiple spatial streams, called multipath. Typically you'll find a maximum of 3 spatial streams in the high end consumer wireless access points, though 802.11n supports up to 4, but equipment which transmits 4 spatial streams is pretty hard to find (unless the market has been flooded by them the last time I checked). You can get a wireless adapter which can receive 2 or 3 spatial streams, which will roughly double/triple your speed, because it allows for 2/3 active connections to the WAP.

Also, contrary to logic, a wireless N wireless access point is most effectively placed in a corner or near a wall which will quickly generate multipath signals, rather than in the middle of a big open room.

I wouldn't bother getting a 802.11ac wireless access point until the standard is finalized, because it will ultimately support up to 8 spatial streams, and right now it only supports up to 4. There are also other enhancements scheduled to be implemented. You'd be best served to get a high end 802.11n wireless access point for now, such as the ASUS RT-N66U, which is what I have, and it's easily one of the best routers on the consumer market.

Out of curiosity, what speeds do you consider slow?

          ASUS RT-N66U here as well.

Just ran that, no I don't think my router/AP is holding me back. The range is also very good, I am really happy with it and I bought it when it was new and much more expensive than they are now.

Oh, so it seems that I spent needlessly? That sucks.
Anyway, as long as it's faster now, I'm happy. The company I work for also uses the same wifi standard as I do and they even have the one which works out great for managing several AP's.

Wait, so 802.11b with WEP isn't sufficient anymore?

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't a lot of wireless devices not equipped to work with ac yet?
