Working on Yelp alternative for gun owners

I'm working on a project to provide gun owners and other sports enthusiast with alternative to Yelp for reviews and member commentary. Take a few minutes and check out Recon Outpost, www.reconoutpost.com.

It is a project in the works so we would appreciate that you sign-up and write a review or two about some of your frequented businesses. Send any comments or feedback to support@reconoutpost.com.

I just want to give a thank you to Mark from San Carlos for kicking the tires and giving feedback on registration changes. We dropped the request for age.

Thanks for all the comments below. Just to be clear, there will be no filtering of reviews or holding businesses captive or over a barrel. If a user post a review, the business owner can post a reply, NO CHARGE! It's FREEto be listed and FREE to respond to customer comments, which are posted as well.

One of the next things on the roadmap is to add private messaging between reviewers and business owners so that any disputes can be resolved in private.

What's wrong with Yelp for firearms companies and services?

I haven't personally experienced it, but my boss says that Yelp basically held him hostage, and told him that if he didn't pay them $2400 a year that he would never get control of his Yelp listing. I guess in his industry that it makes a big difference to be on Yelp and have that control. He ended up paying for it, which I think is a crazy amount of money for a directory listing. It is what it is. Isn't "yelp" the sound a dog makes when it's been hit? LOL

I've heard those kinds of things about Yelp from many different sources. I'd vote to ignore it, myself.

I don't trust their reviews, too easy to game the numbers. After I moved the last time, the GF and I gave the moving company a 4-star review. They called and offered us $100 to make it a 5-star. I said ok, cashed the check, and didn't change squat.

              Great idea!
              ANY Yelp alternative is welcome.

Is the website fully functioning at this point?
I am having trouble leaving a review.

Seems like a good idea OP, I signed up and reviewed a couple LGS.

I hope the project takes off and the Gun community appreciates this tool.

                And yeah, ... screw Yelp.
                They practice legal extortion IMO.

Another Yelp hater here....I am a business owner and I purposefully ignore Yelp. Too many idiots and trolls leave reviews there every time you look at them wrong, or they don't like the color of your shirt.

My experience with Yelp was negative as others posted. Yelp filtered out most of our good customers' reviews without any warning claiming that reviews did not look reliable. The customers and reviews were real. I checked reviews posted on Yelp, many reviewers show tens or hundreds posts. I can hardly imagine a real customer doing nothing but posting reviews on every shopping deal made. While reviewing posts on Yelp I discovered several posters specializing in writing negative reviews. All of the above raises a question of reliability of reviews from unknown persons. I cannot claim it is all Yelp's fault. Yelp has built a successful business model even expending internationally according to recent publications. It rather looks like a generic problem with reviews based on unknown sources with easy options to troll.
Let's give a try to recountpost.com as alternative for sports and firearms trades.

Yelp must be owned by the other lady who runs her company the same way. Angies list....same type of scammers. They should all be exposed and class action sued and put out of biz.

My mechanic knows of a family owned tire shop in Livermore that has 2/5 stars. Yelp reached out to them about paying for a service. Since it's a small shop, there wasn't room in the budget to justify the cost. So that explained the skewed reviews that appears on their page and how positive ones are hidden.

From that point on, I lost faith in yelp.

I don't see how what yelp does is any different than organized crime telling a business owner they have to "pay for protection".
