    You can pick up the baofeng radios for cheap at amazon and use the free software CHIRP to program them from FRS and GMRS. I believe their batteries will last longer than the midlands

      It's also illegal to use the baofeng radios on FRS and GMRS frequencies...

        I like Motorolla. Most models support both rechargable and regular batteries.

          I generally like them too but I saw two concerning issues:
          1) Apparently, many models have issued operating at low temperatures.
          2) Support from Motorola is poor.
