iPhone stuck in "headphone" mode

Like the title says, my girlfriends 5C is stuck in head phone mode, and we can't seem to fix it. It just randomly started happening today, does anyone have any suggestions?

Turn off phone, take battery out let set for 10 minutes before you re-install the battery and turn back on.

Happened to me. I just inserted a headphone plug and pulled it back out. Seemed to do the trick.

Things to try:

Plug in headphones, play some audio, remove headphones
Turn phone off and on again
Try go clean headphone phone jack with q-tip
Complete software restore (preferably using DFU mode)
Trip to the apple store

Someone from the apple support forum said the following

If nothing works, such as q-tip trick, un-plug in and plug in of the headphone, bluetooth speaker trick, the Setting/General/Accessibility/incoming calls (audio routing for newer software)/set speaker, then headset, turning on shazam, activiate siri...etc. TRY THIS, 1) have someone call you, 2) turn on to speaker mode, 3)turn off the speaker, 4) plug in your headphone, 5) un-plug headphone. This should work!

I know you probably already looked but I would look into the headphone jack area see if it all appears normal. (comparing it to another one with a flashlight.)
and then I would (probably stupidly) put a toothpick in jack hole and gingerly jiggle things around.
( I'm sure you've tried plugging headphones in and out several times as well.)

lastly it was my girlfriend I would trade her that phone and then keep those headphones in whenever she was around...

it might even make my relationships last longer

No go with that, didn't work

Not sure how to remove the battery on an iphone, but will look up

Hold down the home button and power button until the phone resets...see if that will work.

Shine a flashlight into headphone jack hole, look to see if pink. If so there is liquid damage.

you can check if phone is still under warranty at apple website here.

It should tell you if its going to be a free fix or not.
