    laptop booting from usb

    Hi everyone,
I need some advice about how to boot a laptop from a usb memory. I bought a small HP laptop on sale and it comes with Windows 8.1. I want to install Windows 7 instead but the computer doesn't have a CD/dvd drive, but it does have two USB ports. How can I make a usb bootable so I can boot the laptop from the USB to install Win 7?
    thanks.

Yes it is possible, your gonna need 2 things - first is to (on another computer would be easiest) create a bootable usb drive - there's a lot of sites that can guide you in doing this.

Second is getting into the computer and setting the boot sequence, which is typically floppy/cd/hd/etc) to boot off of the usb first then the hd and on down the line.

I did this once eons ago and it's relatively easy for those with minor computer experience, but like I said there are certain to be guides everywhere on the interwebs that can guide you through the process.

      Follow this:

      Then use this utility: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

Then just hit delete or f12 or whatever your computer has you hit to access one time boot or to get in the bios and change the boot order

For second step of what oxnard wrote, u need to get into the bios. When u turn it on it will say something like press DEL for setup. But it is usually really fast and u wont be able to read it. Usually try f10, f12 or Delete keys. Just keep pressing one of those when u turn on the computer. Then go find the boot sequence, move USB up and save and exit.

This. I've done this several times. Most recently the same as you, going from 8.1 to 7 (dual booting with Mint 17.1 in my case). Get your Win 7 disc image, then run a bootable usb creator program and then find the "boot options" or similar commands when the computer first starts up. Usually del or f12 like bluedsteel mentioned.

Thanks for the tips. I just have to get the USB bootable.
