Keeping DROS/Receipts

Hello All,

I've been keeping all my DROS and receipts.

I eventually scanned them and kept them on an external hard drive and my laptop.

Sure enough, my laptop crashes and I can't located my external hard drive.

Was I just being a hoarder? Should I worry that I no longer have copies of all my DROS and receipts?

Should I attempt to reacquire these things? Can I even reacquire them?

You're not an FFL, you're not required by law to keep anything like that. Keep them, shred them, whatever woks best for you.

Most of my receipts are so faded now that I don't know what I paid. I'm trying to get rid of all the firearms I've purchased through DROS. Wanna buy a S&W 686+?

They are good to have for insurance or LEO if ever stolen

They will work if something is stolen. What is better is a log of each firearm with serial numbers of firearm and optics etc. Then a photo of each firearm. Then a list of any extras such as mags/clips(like M1Garand),replacement stocks/grips, replacement or reworked triggers, muzzle brakes, replacement barrels etc.
Brownells sells packet of 25 with plastic sleeves for putting them in a 3 ring binder. They are folded so you can also put in the sales slip, dros, owners manual and any other manuals etc. for accessories.

I try to keep at least three copies of electronic media for important files. Man computer, CD/flash drive, external hard disk, that way if something goes kaput I've got a backup.

OP,

On in excel file, write down important info about each gun such as: Make, model, caliber, date of acquisition etc. take at least one picture of each gun on the serialized side and print a hard copy for your records.

You can also do this by hand, available at gun stores are small panflets where you can write down each gun you own and specs. I wouldn't worry too much about losing the dros records.

I did not keep all my receipts, not because of my ex-wife, but because it would shock me to know just what I have spent on firearms/reloading.

I have a gun binder. Started it back when I had a C&R license.
I have not scanned the paperwork. I should.

Wish I had started it back when I first got into guns. I have no info on a Norinco Mak90 that was stolen.
