Being hit in the head by someone else's shells at the range

I have been to the range locally a few times in the past couple of weeks. On Superbowl Sunday I was there and for whatever reason the gal working (she was brand new) put us right next to another couple that was sharing a lane. My wife and I were sharing a lane as we only have the one gun and it was her first time.

Anyhow, before we even got started, the brass from the couple next to us started flying up over the lane divider and squarely onto the top of my head! Does this happen frequently to others? I didn't even realize there was a gap up there. I halfway wanted to ask him what he was shooting that was so rudely landing on me but I didn't want to distract him (as he was instructing his partner as was I)

Is there anything one can do in this situation? It was largely distracting to have someone else's shells hitting me on top of my noggin but I wasn't sure if there was some way for him to modify his position within the lane to avoid it or if it was appropriate for me to even ask! I am new to shooting (on my own). Anyway, after a while they must have switched guns because it stopped raining brass from above, just thought I would check in and see if this happens to anyone else.

My XD9 seems to deposit shells more to the side than up but I imagine each gun has it's unique attributes. It also doesn't deposit them nearly with that much force.

It happens. Sometimes I'll wait until their string is over, sometimes I'll use it as a training moment.

It's all part of being at the range. If it was that big of a deal, I would've asked the range staff to be placed at a booth farther away.

USI has portable mesh barriers one can use. Sadly, all my guns seem to throw brass a couple lanes over to my right.

Some ranges actually require a hat.
But so the ejects hit you. So what. You got a soft head or something?
I think if I don't get hit at least once at a range, I didn't get into the action.

I've taken a couple of shells from an AR to the neck, mom thought i got a hicky at the range.

Gotta remember, this is shooting in the "real world", not Playstation. When this happens, use the distraction of incoming shells as a "training prop" and learn to concentrate in spite of the annoyance.

That used to happen alot when I shot at Cordova Shooting Center, their lane dividers are pretty weak.
I would always pack a boonie hat in my range bag for that reason.

Until I got an adjustable gas block, my Mini-14 Target used to throw brass about 40 feet.

"Shoot back" with a P.38! It ejects shells to the left!

Seriously, wear a hat, "time around them", or just "deal". I get pelted fairly frequently - I just laugh and keep on shooting! You'd think more ranges would have a "complete" barrier to prevent this, but what the hey! It doesn't really bother me. Seems to usually be .45s that fly my way - sometimes I get home and find empties of calibers I don't even own in my range bag!
