Come on, that gun needs to be completely broken down and detailed. That gun is worth preserving. If you don't feel up to the task, take it to someone who is.Anchors Aweigh

Start kissing her *** and let her know how cool you think the gun is. Who knows what the future may bring.
I own a Springfield 1911 and have taken it apart several times for cleaning. It is not an easy process. Well, compared to a modern pistol.Comment

Breaking down 1911s is easy to me. A bit more of a PITA than a Tupperwear pistol but not difficult. I just bought an Astra 600. Now that is a difficult pistol for a new owner to break down and to re-assemble.
YouTube videos are helpful and a few layers of electrical tape or a cut up old ATM/Credit card will help you avoid the idiot scratch. That pistol is begging for a field strip and good cleaning/lube IMHO. If you don't feel confident to do so, get someone who is and do it right.
About a third of this thread veers toward the leg humpers. Jeez guys, no wonder we rarely see ladies on Calguns other than the ladies forum. Take it down a notch.NRA Certified Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor, Shotgun Instructor and Range Safety Officer

I think I'll actually spend the time to do this thing right. Thank you for the correction Stormvet about the military branches. I asked her about the Army Air Corps and she didn't know. He eventually retired Air Force, so I'd assume you're right.
In all likelyhood it'll be shot once and put in storage.

If you don't feel comfortable stripping it down, here are a few things you can do (no stripping involving...pun clearly intended):
With the slide locked back:
-Clean and oil the exposed barrel
-Clean and oil the exposed guide rod
-I usually put a tiny dab of oil on the hinge, where the hammer meets the frame
-Clean the inside of the barrel
-Gently scrub inside the mag wellComment

Be careful not to put a scratch on that nice 1911
It's not difficult to clean OP. Have funComment

Chances are strong (her dad being military) that it WAS cleaned before it was put away last. Worst case...strip it down...it's NOT hard and if the slide release doesn't go back in easily....you could walk it into ANY gunstore and they'd do it without hesitation for you.
But def take her out shooting if you can.
Have fun!Comment

Very nice. Who was the manufacturer? So many different makers in that period and some are worth more than others.Originally posted by ar15barrelsSo you are throwing out 95% of reality to select the 5% of reality where you are actually right?

for historical accuracy, the Air Corps was succeeded by U.S. Army Air Force in 1941.
