Mailing A Gun? (To the manufacturer)

I have to send my .22/.410 combo back to Chiappa for some warranty repairs. Is there anything special or different about sending guns vs regular packages? Any tips or advice? It'll cross state lines, if that matters.

Long guns (not hand guns) can be shipped to and from manufacturer's through the USPS. Just put nothing on it that identifies the contents. And, of course, it is shipped unloaded. Unless the laws have changed, that has been my experience.

What about UPS or other private delivery? I hate the post office.

UPS and FedEx will try to tell you all guns need to be shipped "overnight" $$$$$$ but there is no law requiring it.

I simply stick my weapons in a plain brown box and drop it off at my local office supply store for pick up without telling them what's in it (mine never asks actually). Properly insured of course.

Yeah... I'm not overnighting a 3 foot long package to Ohio. I think I'll just do like you say and put it in a plain box (or tube?) and "plead the 5th". If they ask I'll call it machine parts.

Drop it off at a non-UPS Corporate location and you won't have to play stupid as they will almost never ask, "what's in the box?".

Can the weapon be broken down to make it a shorter (less obviously rifle) package?

Yes, but not without removing a couple screws. I'm not sure if that would mess with the warranty. Probably not but I'd rather not risk it.
