I recently inherited an AMT Hardballer .45 1911 from my deceased Father. I found it has a broken rear sight pin. After a couple thousand rounds through the gun with excellent performance and accuracy, it was all over the place when I went to the range this last time to only find that the sight pin had broken. I have called around and have given a lot of stores laughs when I tell them what I am looking for. Other than exorbitant quotes from local gun smiths, any recommendations on where I could attain a rear sight pin for this? Thank you!

The extractor broke on my AMT 22 Backup and I was able to find one just can't remember where now. Just saying they are out there also if while you are looking for that if you the pin/lever for removing the slide get it. My brother had it break on his when I went by and asked them for a new one they gave me one for mine also as they are known to break. When his broke scared the dodo out of him as the slide came back and hit his hand.2 Timothy 3Comment

Don't know which particular pin you're talking about, but pin breakage was a regular occurrence on the Colt Elliason rear sight on Gold Cup pistols. In that case it was the traverse pin that the sight pivots on for vertical adjustments, which also holds the sight body on the gun. When it broke, you usually had a tiny lil' metal Easter egg hunt.
The classic fix was a piece of drill rod. With machinist type drill sets, there are a whole big bunch of bits, in very small size increments. You'd find one that was a good press fit, cut a piece off of the shank to length and tap it in there.

Zat it?I meant, it is my opinion that...

Congratulations on your inherited firearm. That is a nice example. As someone who collects 1911 clone guns from the 70's-90's, I like those.Comment

I have an AMT hardballer and an AMT Skipper, and an AMT Lightning 22 lr (copy of a Ruger MkII???).
That pin breaks often, and now on at least one of the pistols, the adjusting screw does not stay put. The detents do not hold the screw in place.
I have talked to a local gunsmith that specializes in 1911's. He says he should be able to machine the slide and install something like a Dawson adjustable sight, but I have not had him do it yet. Right now I shoot a Colt Combat Commander in nickel, instead, The colt sight is adjustable but does not move.
I will have to remember the drill rod trick.
Has anyone had experience with the adjustment screw for these sights? I think the sight has "micro" machined into it.He who dies with the most tools/toys wins

So your solution to a crappy part is to use a crappier part?
Mebbe shawnsennett wants to actually shoot the gun and not have pieces fall off.
If you just want to look at it, then it doesn't matter what quality the parts are.
I'm guessing the parts involved in your case are really small, so I don't know if this will help, but on other sights I've taken a prick punch and deepened detents to help them hold.I have an AMT hardballer and an AMT Skipper, and an AMT Lightning 22 lr (copy of a Ruger MkII???).

So they could enlarge the holes for the roll pin and use a larger one??? Or the solid one? This is not a repair you need to drop a $100 at the gunsmith to do. But then the level of mechanical ability is pretty low in Kali; so maybe they do need to leave it at the gunsmith for a year until he gets around to it....So your solution to a crappy part is to use a crappier part?

Do you mind if I send you a PM too? I lost my rear sight on my AMT 1911 a year back and have yet to find a replacement. Its a difficult sight to replace (I've taken to different gunsmiths and the best they told me to do was "keep checking eBay").Comment
