    For everyone who own's multiple...

firearms, what will you do if you need to vacate your property quickly. I thought about it after the earthquake yesterday. I have a safe downstairs and I wondered if I needed to get out real quick with my all my firepower how will I do it? Do you have a large portable gun case near your guns for just such an event? I was thinking of doing that but for others who have a large collection that might not be an option. When the big earthquake finally hit's us here in the sf bayarea..what's your exit strategy for your gun's?

I would say get the guns that you would use to protect yourself and your family first (if you can).

Did you mean this EQ ? http://quake.usgs.gov/recenteqs/Quakes/nc51171759.htm

I have a Pelican double rifle case that I would use in such a event. However we are in an area that is off the beaten track and don't feel the effects that those of you that live in the bay area do. To be more secure I thought of this contingent and built a stainless steel box that fits behind the bench seat in my 1Ton4WD Chevy truck. its heavy but would take a long time to break into it and that was one of the requirements IMO if im going to have weapons out in the world outside of my property.

The probelm with portable safes (same goes for home documents) is that they are portable. It's really easy for a thief to snake them if they make it into your home. If I keep all my important stuff in one place that is ready to go, then it's very easy for thief to make off with it. It's best to plan ahead and have an organized exit stratedgy. I would probably go for my glock and my AK as they are the most reliable weapons.

Take the guns you might need along with your survival kit and documents and get out of danger. Your life and your family's life is what is important. Guns can be replaced.

Well you have to weigh it out. If you seriously only have 2 minutes, you are going to have to take only what you can. Of course there will be things missed that you can't replace. But you have to weigh what is important at that time. For me it goes family, pets, firearms, vehicle keys. Even if you can't get a registered AW back, it better than loosing your life or a loved one. You can always move to another state or build an OLL and store it in another state.

The point here is that you can replace a gun. Legally or less than legally. As opposed to a life.

I have 4 soft cases and a couple of hard cases in the gunroom. I can pack the cases and roll the 'extra' guns up in sheets and blanket in less than 5 minutes.

I have a duffle bag with some carbines, mags and ammo. If the need rises, I'm grabbing that and everything else can be damned.

My life and my family's life comes first.

In a SHTF scenario. Remember to travel lightly. Keep enough firearms to protect your group but food, water, safe shelter and medical supplies are first priority.

I'd have to say that it'd be a "chuck everything into a bag and bug the he!! out" kinda situation.

There's no guarantee you'll be able to use your car/truck for transportation. That has to be taken into consideration, especially if it's a quake large enough to warrant the decision to bug out of the area for a bit.

Also, there's no guarantee you'll be able to get into your safe to access your firearms when you need to. If your home suffers major structural damage (or collapses) in a major quake, how does that impact your evac plan?

Lots of thoughts to ponder that could alter your plans to leave town.

As far as what to pack and how to transport it..... I'd have to say it'd be smart to break it down to several different "lines" of gear.

First Line - Bare necessities you need to un-@$$ the area ASAP, primarily stuff kept immediately on your body. Holstered weapon w/ reloads for it, personal docs (ID, passport etc), cash, multi-tool & utility knife, small LED flashlight or a 1-cell SureFire, maybe a CamelBack with some snacky stuff stashed in it or several energy bars in a cargo pocket. A cellphone should be a requirement, but there's no guarantee cellular service will be available after a quake.

Second Line - Gear to enhance your survivability. Most folks think of armor carriers and/or load bearing equipment for this category. That's all fine and dandy BUT doing a bug out from LA isn't bugging out in Iraq, most folks (with some notable exceptions) aren't going to throw on a CIRAS and fight their way to Vegas. I'd suggest a 5.11 vest loaded with a lot of the previous items. Another weapon w/ ammo, more cash, food & water, spare batteries, charger for the cellphone (!!!), etc etc. A good first aid kit should be included. In addition to the stuff in the 5.11 vest, preload the larger items in a small daypack or bug-out bag and make sure it's ready to go 24/7.

Third Line - Sustainment gear. This can range from lots of food and water to tents for shelter. Depending on what your mode of transpo is, it can be a lot or not.

I would seriously look at your contingency options, whether you can use a vehicle or not.

If you can, that's GREAT. Pack everything up and get on the road.

If you aren't able to drive out of the area, then you need to decide whether you're going to risk bugging out on foot and at a minimum what needs to go with you. Anything left behind should be secured as best you can, in the event someone takes interest in your vacated residence.

Point well taken. For me I'm a bachelor so I guess it' just me and my guns. I've already put together a earthquake bugout kit...backpack with water, food, med kit, radio, and change of clothes. I'm just trying to figure out a way to transport my guns. If I'm gonna have to go on foot (God forbid) then it will only be one rifle and a pistol. I guess the rest will be sitting in my safe and hopefully when I return all my stuff will still be there safe and sound.

If it's a natural disaster, you'll most likely get shot by LE equipped like that...

I keep all my mags loaded for just this reason. I can just bag everything I need and walk out the door/window/hole in the wall. In a real SHTF you don't have time to load up mags so have them ready to pickup and go. I'd take my SU-16CA, Glock 17, Buckmark 22lr. All my guns I can find ammo for just about anywhere. I feel sorry for those who only buy firearms chambered in 357sig, 10mm, 6.8, 338win or other non popular rounds. Bring guns that are chambered in common rounds that LEO and military would have such as 223/5.56, 308/7.62, 9mm and 45ACP.
