    mini 14 with hi cap

Discussion with a friend who had registered a mini 14 to his son last year as a inter family
Transfer. He stated he had given the gun to his son when he was 12 and it had ruger factory hi cap mags with it.
My question is, OK they are Cal legal as they are 20-30 years old. But can a minor have legally possed them back then so as too be able too posess and use them now as he is well over21 now???

Why not, no age limit on owning magazines.

Was this a volreg by the son or an intra-family transfer?

If intra-family transfer was conducted last year, it's going to be difficult to claim that the transfer actually took place when his son was 12 (would that coincide with the year 1999?)

(Possession is not an issue, the transfer may be)

        ^^^

In the days before 2014, dad could legally hand his son a rifle and say 'I want you to have this Rifle'. No paperwork required. He could have also gifted gear and accessories, magazines, etc at any age as well. The Son can legally own those mags today.

Does it really matter, if he is caught with them by law enforcement they are just going to call them a nuisance and take them.

I can tell you from experience he will get hassled. I have owned my Mini-14 (187 series) since 1987 (was owned by my father since 85). I have switched to using 10 round mags instead of the 20 & 30 round mags I have had since the 80's as I have been hassled a couple of times. I was even recently told by a "LEO" that having a bi-pod on it was illegal, it needs a bullet button, etc. I carry a copy of the FLOWCHART in my rifle bag and have pulled it out more in regards to my 30 year old Mini-14 than either of my ARs.

Tell him to make sure there are no prohibited features on the Mini-14 as there were many factory and after market items for the Mini that might make it run afoul of featureless.

Possessing them & using them in Ca. are two different things. Keep that in mind.
