Gun lock options for a bolt rifle?

Got a question I'm hoping you folks can help me with. I'm trying to come up with a better way to lock my bolt action rifles while transporting and storing them. I only have two rifles, both bolt action. Both are kept locked, in a separate locked room and ammo is left in locked ammo boxes. I also use "discreet" style soft rifle cases to transport my rifles to/from the range, because I'm trying not to get too many raised eyebrows from my neighbors who I would rather keep completely in the dark.

What I've been doing is to remove the bolt from the rifles and use cable locks through the open receiver. Problems with that are that it increases the risk of damaging the bolt, damaging the inside of the magazine / receiver, and is just a PITA in general. Plus, it leaves the bolt in the "cocked" position which is not what I prefer to do.

I don't want to use a locked carrying case as that just looks too "gunny" for my neighbors and I prefer my soft discreet "keyboard" cases. So I'm thinking about getting a couple trigger locks but am open to other suggestions. What are you guys using?

Put a tiny little padlock through both zipper pulls on the soft case? I use these:

"Nonconcealable firearms (rifles and shotguns) are not generally covered within the provisions of California Penal Code section 25400 and therefore are not required to be transported in a locked container. However, as with any firearm, nonconcealable firearms must be unloaded while they are being transported. A rifle or shotgun that is defined as an assault weapon pursuant to Penal Code sections 30510, 30515, or 30520 must be transported in accordance with Penal Code sections 16850, 25610, and 30945, subdivision (g)."

Oh you could get a strong box. Pull the bolts out and store them in it.

Is that legal with a soft case? If so that would be perfect.

            Trigger Locks
            That's what I'm considering getting.

I considered that except I don't want to leave the bolts "cocked". Plus, there's the increased possibility of dropping, damaging, or getting the bolt dirty (ask me how I know...).

I read that, I guess I'm just trying to be extra cautious. Especially in light of some of the new legislation that's been passed.

Yes, legal. That is how I transport my handguns.

Awesome, that's the perfect solution then (at least for me). I already use those locks on my ammo cases, now I'll get a couple more for my rifle cases. Thanks!

Trigger locks or cable locks through the action do not satisfy "locked transport" laws. They have to be in a case or container.

... and if the cases are actually gun cases, rather than re-purposed (by you, manufacturers get to change labels and marketing if they like) guitar cases or duffel bags or whatnot, your long guns need not be locked except when going through a Federal (co-located with CA state) Gun Free School Zone.

If you want to keep locked for transportation reason or just to keep accidents in the house I just use small padlocks like mentioned above.
These are not super secure but it keeps my young nieces and nephews put of my ammo boxes and my hard case
