    cracked casing

I just got smoe new 7.62x54r rounds and noticed that a few had cracked. Should I continue to use these or send them back. I'm not sure who produced them b/c they were a birthday present from my girl. I can't find the one that had the largest crack but it was about 1/2inch.

on a different note got my first lower, now I need to save money for an upper.

    Is that a steel case?

I think that steel case doens't expand well as brass case. I am inclined to believe that it is ok for steel case to crack at neck.

I had few cracked at neck with MN91 with steel cased ammos.

    But I could be wrong.
'Cuz big holes are easier to see.

You can correct my spelling and grammar error anytime.
I welcome it. How else would I learn.

It's common in both steel and brass cased 7.62x54 depending on manufacture and year. Sometimes just the difference between heavy and light ball like the brass cased Bulgarian.
What's the head stamp on that case? I can probably tell you when/where it was made.
Invest in a broken case extractor. You don't use them often, but they can make the difference between a good and bad day at the range.

yes its steel. 10 on top 81 on bottom, with others stamped 82 (none of which have cracked). I had no problems at all with extraction. I figured it was fine but I read some posts that said it was bad and I have about 200 rounds so I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't damage the gun. Thanks for the help.

I've shot a good 600 rounds of bulgarian surplus (heavy ball and steel core) through my 91/30 and I'd say a good 1 in 30 rounds had a crack in the neck and I've fired them all. THat chamber will hold it together good enough and I doubt the bolt would shoot me in the face...but who knows...that's alot of pressure in that 54r cartridge. Some cracks were down a good 3/4" from the top, and after firing, the case has ripped even more on some, some didn't rip more.

This ammo was all made in 1954.

cool sounds good. I always wear safety glasses whenever i'm shooting got in the habit working in a shop my boss made us put glasses on as soon as we walked in the door, and they saved me more then a few times. safety glasses are always good advice you only got 2.

Neck and shoulder crack, ho-hum - body crack, gas in the face - crack through the base of the case - bad juju. If the latter happens to you, you won't forget it.

Bulgarian ammo. It may be the pic but I've never seen a case like that, is it brass or steel?
                        Are the bullet tips painted?
