So my neighbor stopped by to let me know that his house was broken into last sunday. According to his talks with the police, various homes on our street, which stretches down to maybe 1/3rd of a mile have also been broken into. Now I'm worried about where to keep my HD guns since i usually have them in the open behind locked doors.

Obvious answer would be in a safe when you're not home.So my neighbor stopped by to let me know that his house was broken into last sunday. Now I'm worried about where to keep my HD guns since i usually have them in the open behind locked doors.
Otherwise if you have no safe, I'd remove bolts/slides/etc, whatever is easiest to disable the gun, and take them with you when you leave. Use a bike lock or heavy chain to lock the receivers to something solid and not easily moved/removed.
There's only so much you can do. Even safes are vulnerable.

I might as well carry my guns in the trunk wherever I go, my car is less likely to be broken into than my house.Comment

+1 on a good safe and please bolt the safe to the floor! Also, a good house alarm wouldn't be a bad idea. Most home insurances gives you a break on your premiums.Comment

+1 on the alarm and safe. You thought about holstering up the HD gun? There are 3 kinds of people in this world.
The wise, learn from the mistakes of others.
The smart, learn from their own mistakes.
The others, well......they just never learn.

I live in a single room of a house rented to multiple tenants. I've only got long guns so I'd need a big safe that would not take up too much space in a single room. My HD gun is a Mossberg 500.
If I had pistols, they would be going in a small safe bolted to the floor in my closet.Comment

Get a good dog. We had the same thing happen last year, our neighbor was burgled. According to the neighbor the cops said they found signs of attempted entry on a number of houses on the street. Our house (equipped with loud, scary-looking pit bull who is actually a giant wuss) wasn't touched.
And, if you're looking for a good small safe for long arms:
I have it on good authority that these hide quite nicely in the back of a closet.I've never seen an American flag burned at a gun show.Comment

times are tough and people are getting desperate....you can't take things for granted such as thinking you are safe b/c you live in a good area....criminals are cowards but feed on your fear and opportunity.....be proactive when it comes to your home, security lights, locked gates and keeping your windows closed at night are great....an alarm system plus a good dog is a huge plus as well.....not too mention a few of my "toys."Comment

I was just talking to my gf the other day about how it's the "nicer" neighborhoods that get burglarized. If I'm a poor robber, would I rob others in the ghetto? Maybe, but I'd probably want to go for people who I perceive to have more money. Stay safe, be vigilant.
