Advice on selling my rifle

I'm thinking about selling one of my rifles. I've invested a fair bit of money adding custom bits (Boyds stock, picatinny rail, Vortex scope, etc.). I still have the original stock and rails, so I wondered, is it better to sell the rifle as a complete, upgraded package? Or restore it to it's original condition and sell it and the accessories separately?

Also, is it usually better to give it to a local gun shop on consignment or sell it through Calguns.net?

Advertise it in both configurations and sell it here, you will take a big cut if you consign it and you could very well even lose it through consignment.

I think he means one ad but stating X amount of dollars for stock configuration and Y amount of dollars for rifle with upgrades.

Run one add for stated rifle as this way or that way, take pics in both configurations if possible as pictures sell! or post pics of rifle as is and pics of all additional parts.

You most likely will get more money selling the rifle in original configuration and then selling all the add on parts separately.

The downside? Who knows how long that will take all said and done.

You probably won't get as much selling it all as a package deal, maybe even lose some $ from what you have in it, but you'll move it all faster and easier.

The thing is, you will never ever find a used gun on the marketplace that isnt in 'practically brand new condition' so anybody with a brain discounts that anyway. If you paid $600, be prepared to get $550, if you paid $1200, be prepared to get $1100..etc. If youre lucky, you will get more but right now three things are working against you:

1- the end of SSE means anyone with money is already blowing everything they got (lol) on handguns
2- theres no national or regional incident to make people enter a buying craze,
3- the market has caught up to demand so dealers are selling cheap and if you want to compete with new guns, you have to price yours accordingly.


You could try trading the rifle for whatever it is you intend to replace it with. But expect the other guy to be as... liberal.. in praising his gun as you are of yours lol.

Don't sell in on consignment you won't get nearly what you want. Post it here in the for sale section. Some good info from Geoint too. Good luck

If it is an AR-15 there is a red hot market for those right now. Totally a seller's market. Especially if it is a garage frankenbuild custom rifle. Throw that Del-Ton or M&P Sport out there and repare for an avalanche of "I'll take it's!!"

Think of it similar to selling a car that you put a bunch of extra money into. You won't get it all back no matter what. What one person considers an "upgrade" another person might not like.

I know I'm going to loose some money, just a matter of how much. Depending on how big the loss is, I might just keep it.
