should i go with another ar15 lower or 308 lower?

I have 2 556 carbines and a pistol.

Currently building a 20" 308, and you would be surprised at the cost. I have a little more in my 308 than I do in my post sandy hook carbine.

I say .308. I'm in the early stages of a .308 build myself. 80% lower, DPMS stripped upper, 24" stainless HBAR and a BCM charging handle have only set me back a little over $300 so far. Should be into it less than $800 or $900 total when I'm done.

i would like a balance between home self defense , hunting , long range .

dont worry about home defense AR10. If you're going to go AR10 then do it right and build it with long range, hunting in mind. Primarily long range because AR10 can get heavy for hunting if it has a nice heavy long range barrel. You can always use a 308 or 3006 hunting rifle that is much lighter.

There isn't a "best" barrel length. There are many things to factor in. If you really can't decide on barrel length after researching the pros and cons, buy a 24". It's gonna be a lot cheaper to shorten the barrel if you hate it vs. having to buy a longer barrel if you start with a short one.

Parts interchangeability is a challenge. Typically your options are going to be DPMS pattern, or Armalite pattern for build it yourself rifles. Parts don't generally interchange between the two.
