    Let's Talk 10mm

    Guys,

I have a chance to buy a EAA Tanfo Witness in 10mm. I've read pros and cons on the EAA and I'm excited to try one out.

I currently have 40's and 45's. So tell me where the 10 falls.

    Thanks all

Just bought my first 10mm, but the standard answer is that it packs a lot more punch than anything else in a conventional autoloader. I have a Glock 21 Gen4 that I really really like, so I bought a Glock 20 Gen4. I really only plan to develop super hot loads with it, otherwise it is kind of a pointless purchase since it doesn't do anything else besides launch nuclear hot rounds. I want to get a 135gr bullet up to 1550fps and a 200gr bullet up to 1200 fps.

The advantage of a Glock is that you can run .40 in the stock 10mm barrel.

The best advantage of 10mm is it offers great flexibility in power-one can fire high speed 1200 FPS+ ammo all the way down to 800 FPS powderpuff loads in the same semi-auto handgun.

The price you pay for that flexibility is availability. Asking some shops for 10mm auto is a surefire way to befuddle the clerk. Stuff isn't cheap either, which brings me to one advantage of the Witness- factory conversions exist in every centerfire pistol caliber desired.

So, if say .38 super is dirt cheap where you live, feel free to order a top end and call it good. Part of the reason Tanfoglios are popular overseas is for that reason-European gun laws make even California's regs look like the picture of freedom. One frame, several calibers, no paperwork or red tape.

10MM is a great caliber, try Underwood, Cor-Bon and Buffalo Bore's ammo for some real heat.
IMHO, the major manufacturers such as Remington and Federal load them light.
Lots of great reloading data available as well.

I remember reading that the EAA couldn't handle the full power loads and was meant for the lower power ones. Anyone know if that's true? Something about it severely shortening the life of the firearm.

Mines working fine, and I'm a believer in the motto that 10mm life "Begins at 1300 FPS". Stock recoil spring too, and it's been 500 rounds strong.

Earlier model "budget" lines has problems with the heat treatment or something and had cracking issues with 10mm. The mid and high end line never had such issues.

GW nailed it. The Underwood 135 grn. is advertised as 1600 fps. Every box I've ran was faster, and usually up near 1650.

The 10mm is basically equivalent to the heaviest .357 Mag in an auto-loader. Some have compared it to .41 Mag and it does get into the mid range numbers compared there.

I used a G20 for competition. Depending on the match, I would build a load to fit what was expected. If there was going to be longer ranged stuff, pushing a 155 grain pill to 1300 FPS made for really flat shooting and serious popper knocking. For short range stuff, it could be dialed back to about 900 FPS for some of the mellowest paper punching available.

All in all, you would be hard pressed to find a more versatile cartridge.

I CCW a g29sf with 200g double tap 1200fps rounds. Its a good load but not for the gurly men that cry about recoil while limp wristing.

Keep an eye on the slide of that witness. My buddy had one in 10mm and the slide started to crack.
Hopefully they've fixed whatever was causing the issue, but just a heads up.

Which model? I'm about to get a 10mm barrel for my elite match.
