    Found shotgun

Up duck hunting over the weekend near the Sacramento Refuge. Found a shotgun lying in the grass and dirt just off a main road. If this applies to you or a friend of yours...please contact me or have them do so. Thanks!

Send it to your local PD.

If it's not claimed in 30 or 60 days I believe it's yours and you can DROS the firearm. And if someone is really missing it I'm sure they will file a police report.

NutnFacny left a SLP which was tuned into the local PD and returned back to him that way. Just hope your local PD isn't full of FUD and confiscate the gun or one of them get greedy and claim it for them selves.

it's intentional if it was used in a murder.

If nobody claims it on here or know of somebody who lost the gun I would say turn it in after a couple weeks. That way the cops can run it and hopefully the finder gets to keep it. I would shop around for the friendliest police department that has a return policy to turn it into though.

I would of called it in on the spot. I wouldn't want to be holding any crime/evidence, and get blamed for it or even do jail time via felony, and now you'll be stuck with not owning guns nor being on this site =(

If it was used in a crime it is best to have the police recover it. You don't want your prints on evidence and you have destroyed any evidence that was left behind. Although it is pretty much impossible to prove a particular shotgun was used in a murder unless it has a rifled barrel and slugs were used.

We all know what the right thing to do is. Turn it over to law enforcement with hopes the owner will report it lost and recover it. I would sure hate to loose something as valuable, in addition to having to worry that it might fall into the wrong hands, such children or criminals. This situation begs the question. Are there any actual laws on the books that require you to turn-in a found firearm under penalty of law? My guess is there are laws requiring you to turn-in any found property of some minimal value to law enforcement in order for the person who lost it to have an opportunity to claim it. But again, I'm wondering if there is anything firearms specific.

Probably leaned it up against the vehicle so he could pop open his Bud Light. after 2 or 3 Bud Lights drove off to go have another with the gun still leaning against the vehicle.

If it was a POS gun that doesn't shoot straight it would have been found flung out further from the road.

You should have called the police right away and not have touched it in anyway until the police meets you.

I'm with the "you need to call it in crowd". You are exposing yourself to way more potential liability than any gun is worth.

Is it probable that nothing nefarious is attached to that gun? Yes.

Is the slim chance of it bringing trouble down in you worth it? No, it isnt.

Assuming you picked the gun up, and brought it with you (which is completely reasonable, given you are a responsible gun owner), I would call whichever LE agency handles the area in which you found it, and follow their instructions.

As a general CYA, I would make sure it is segregated from your firearms, when they come to retrieve it.

Here is a link I found regarding California's lost and found laws.
