Changing bolt gun caliber FUD ?

So today went to my local gun shop, you know, looking for something to buy that wasn't there.

And while talking to a clerk (sales associate ) there, he brings up that bolt guns next year, you will no longer be able to change the caliber of the weapon, because you want to, or for any other reason.

New barrels of same cal OK, but no changing cal.

He tells me it's a FED law.......is this FUD, or truth Idk.

I did a search, but found nothing on it.

Doesn't seem right, but who knows, things are getting weirder all the time...

Some counter/sales people are willing to say anything to try to make a sale even if it doesn't make any sense. I do love to listen to them spout their "bovine scat" for the entertainment side of it. Every year when we visit for the holidays I go to the gun stores and listen to the BS that seems to be in large quantities and free. I do like to look at the stuff until I come to the price which seems to have a "premium" attached to it just because it's in their store. Once in a blue moon I do find a real honest to gosh real deal on something I can use and I will buy it. Always pay attention to your BS meter when it goes into overdrive. Keep in mind once in a while you will find a real, honest and knowledgeable counter person and when you do treat them with the respect they have earned and deserve, they are out there but are rare and endangered.

So as long as you keep it the same "caliber" you can change the chambering from .308 to 30-06 to 7.5x53.5 to 7.5x55 to 300WM to 30-30, etc., right? Or does the moron not know the difference between "caliber" and "cartridge"?

Next time you go in, ask him if it will be OK to change the cartridge a rifle is chambered for if it's the same "caliber". Then, to continue to mind fornicate him, tell him that you bought a Handi Rifle or a TC Contender rifle and ask if it'll be OK to change barrels on it. If it isn't, ask him how you can find out what cartridge it was originally sold as because, you don't want to break "the new law". You could have a lot of fun with this.

It's not illegal now but after someone reads this thread it will be on the books for next year.

Is the caliber reported on the new DROS system? If so, this guy is probably inventing laws in his mind by thinking that if the caliber of the gun doesn't match the registration, that it is somehow illegal.

Just the other week, I met a gun store employee who was a retired LEO, who told me that it was illegal to transport a gun and ammunition in the same VEHICLE. When I asked him what the PC was for that law, he said it was FEDERAL.

That's why we always have to take two cars to go to the range!

Likewise you could not use different uppers with the same lower unless they were the same caliber. So you couldn't have a 5.56 upper and a 300 Blackout upper for the same lower.
