    Gun Storing Questions...Cases? Safes?

Sorry for the newbie question but I was picking up my OLL receiver and the FFL place told me that i need to have a gun safe. I have one at my parent's house but not at my current residence. I've always stored my shotgun locked in a case and she said it wasn't good enough.

Can someone please enlighten me about how they keep their ARs when they don't have a safe?

I dont want to get in trouble with the law or get in trouble with just not knowing enough.

    Rather be safe than sorry.

Thats bs you can leave it on your couch. If there are no children (people under 18). She was trying to sell you a safe.

      FUD
Store it however you want at home...a safe is preferable.....But no safe or no cable/trigger lock would hold you liable if a child got hold of the gun....If you don't have a safe at home and you can't sign a safe affidavit you do have to leave with a cable/trigger lock weather it came with the gun or you buy on at the time of pickup.

        FUD to the max!!

You can have your gun loaded or unloaded. Just make sure kids can't get a hold of them

FUD. Also if you get a safe leave a few guns out loaded incase someone breaks in.

Legally, I think your only obligation at the time of transfer is to have a safety device for the gun you are receiving...which means for non-handguns, either

                (A) a safe affidavit or
                (B) a lock + receipt for lock dated within the last 30 days

                if I recall correctly.

As far as "childproofing" requirements for firearm storage (CA Penal Code 12035-12036), I'm not going to quote them as they are rather lengthy and repetitive, but the main point is that if a child gains access to your stored firearms, you're very likely to get into trouble unless

                -they entered illegally
-the firearms were stored in a locked container
-the firearms were made inoperable by a safety device

you are under no legal requirement to have safe to store your guns in
you are responsible if a child gets a hold of your firearm due to you not having it secured

Shorthand for people who, either intentionally or unintentionally, are spreading rumors or falsehoods and "muddying the waters" (so to speak) in a way that might cause fear/uncertainty/doubt over what the law actually says.

Thanks for all the information. This forum has been a learning experience for me everyday.

I'll just keep my guns locked up and in a safe place.

Stay with the forum, i have learned alot about all of the actual laws and suprised by the amound of FUD spread. Before i was part of the gun forum i thought OC was illegal, guns had to be locked up, AKs totally illegal....now it is suprising what i can get away with and how ignorant some cops are of the law. The three biggest source of FUD is the DOJ, PD and some gun stores.

I have a Liberty Safe, Lincoln model 25. Plenty of room for toys and important paperwork. My alarm company, Protection One, gave me a promo code, but it expired 9/30. Sorry.

New safes are pricey, but used ones - you can get them at a steal. Dunno why? When I was living in Sacramento, I spoke to a Sheriff Deputy about where to place it. He said, out in the open and bolted to the floor or wall. The robbers will either:
                            1. Look at it in disgust because there's no way they're going to get in it and will wind up just grabbing your DVD player and take off. Or,
                            2. Start whacking away trying to open it - which they won't be able to - wasting all their time and eventually the police will show up.

Get a good alarm system, too. NOT A DOG! Dogs are pets. Unless you're investing on a Schutzhund rottweiler or german shepherd, your dog is a pet. My German Shepherd was a guard dog. If you want to see an impressive Shepherd, go see Frank Tabor at Tabor Shooting Supply. Don't eyeball the Shepherd, he'll stare YOU down.
I'm not having a glass of wine, I'm having SIX. It's called a tasting and it's classy.

I am gonna get a good safe by the end of this year. It's a good investment.
