Was boarding a flight in Phoenix last week to John Wayne airport, in Phoenix they pulled me aside and did the swab test on my hands, then they rub both hands with a Band-Aid like something and then putting that in some kind of analyzer Machine gizmo, just curious, what if I had been shooting that morning, which I have done the day before, where they going to take me in a room and beat me with a hose, question me , just wondering if I would have missed my flight, has any of this happened to any of you fellow cal gunners? If so what happened just curious thanks.

TSA Question

Some of the chemical sniffers used by the TSA will give a false positive reading for explosives if you or your clothing have excessive gunshot residue present. I've never had them stop me for GSR on my hands but I did make the mistake of using my range bag as a carry on once. Once I explained the situation TSA politely requested that I find another carry on bag and sent me on my way."A vote is like a rifle; it's usefulness depends upon the character of the user." - Theodore Roosevelt -
I have had it happen often. Most of the time nothing happens. A few times I have had to explain why the little machine was beeping. Never caused a long delay, and no rubber hoses were involved. You, you, and you: Panic. The rest of you, come with me.
Incoming fire has the right of way.

I use a computer type bag to carry handguns and ammo sometimes making quick trips to the range, or when shooting in the out back 40. I also use the bag as a carry on.
TSA has swabbed it and looked inside many times. I give them the explanation, and they send me on my way. Never have been detained, beaten, searched, humiliated, missed a flight, missed a meal, or suffered any other barbaric tortures. You may not like guns, and choose not to own one. That is your right. You might not believe in God. That is your choice. However, if someone breaks into your home, the first two things you're going to do are, 1) Call someone with a gun, 2) Pray they get there in time.Comment

It's a nitrate thing.
Nitrates are a common component of most explosives. They're also a common component of fixed ammunition propellants.
For that reason, it's a good practice to not use your range bag as a carry on, and also to ensure that you're "nitrate-free" when you go through a TSA checkpoint. The goal is to operate "below the radar." Nothing good ever happens when you create a "false-positive" alarm at a TSA checkpoint.
Lessons learned the hard way about airport security (Some from personal experience, most from either doing the investigation, or reviewing the investigation.):
1) Don't argue with the TSA screener. It just will not work. They're used to getting yelled at and they don't have the authority to do it your way. Don't sweat the small stuff. Get a TSA manager for the big stuff.
2) Don't start a fight on an airplane. It's a federal offense, and will probably get you on the "No-Fly" list. Taking Amtrack or Greyhound to Boston sucks.
3) If you're a LEO, don't try to badge your way past the TSA. It doesn't work (refer back to #1 above). It's even less likely to work when you're drunk.
4) Don't wear steel shank boots going through the metal detector, especially if you're travelling in the company of 136 other unit members also wearing steel shank boots (This one learned back when you could keep your shoes on).
5) Don't use your police duty bag as a carry on. There may be stray round floating around in it.
6) Don't use a chemical MRE heater to warm a MRE meal inside a "Terminal" equipped with a smoke detector. If you build a man a fire, you'll keep him warm for the evening. If you set a man on fire, you'll keep him warm for the rest of his life.Comment

I've been swabbed several times the day after I've been shooting, as well as the day after I've been reloading, and even making my own black power and never once has their machine gone off on me. I wear the same jeans for 3 or 4 days too, so I had the same pants on that I spilled KNO3 all over the previous night, and still nothing.
They've swabbed my open gun case before too, the day after I went shooting and didn't clean my guns. I asked if their machine detects gunpowder residue since there was residue all over the place, he said "yes", and still the machine returned green.
I don't think those swabs do jack **** and like the rest of the TSA, is just more useless political theatrics to make scared people feel better.
I've also accidentally carried live 22lr ammo (about 15 rounds) in my carry on backpack probably about 3 times before I discovered it and took it out myself.

I've had bags swabbed (probably due to power residue from something). Not a big deal if you don't have anything you are not supposed to have.
Probably a good idea not to use a range bag as a carry-on. The power isn't so much an issue, but if you have a loose round in there you can get into real trouble. You think you know, but you have no idea.

If you were in pre check they swab hands. If not, just random. Have it done sometimes on my flights. I did have a coworker get stopped and questioned about residue on her hands. We had found a mostly empty package of coke earlier in the day. We speculate that was what caused it. Don't know for sure.
Anyway, they will ask questions and might look a little harder at your bag. Then they will stop violating your rights and send you on your way.Starve the beast, move to a free state.
