    totally strange question

So I am currently working overseas as a Contractor and am an Expat while I'm here. My question is this and i can't find any info on this my hypothosis is that it isn't a factor but I wanted to ask the question on here anyways. Will my Expat status play against me the next time I want to buy a firearm in the US when they run the background check? I'm living in the UAE if it matters. I hope to buy a firearm when I get home on RnR and I don't want to run into problems.

    Thanks
    Tim

You have to have residency in the US to buy a gun. Other than that you are GTG.

I still have a residency in the US. I wasn't sure what they look at on the background checks because I was, well....ignorant. I never had a problem so I never gave it much thought. I"ve only bought 4 guns from a dealer. Everything else was a Hand-down or C&R.

Does "Expat" mean you're not a U.S. citizen?

I can tell you from personal experience that you will have no problems buying a gun when you come back to the US, even if it's for a 2 week R&R. Since you are a contractor working overseas you still retain your US residency and you can still buy guns.

Also, when you file your taxes, you can exclude $92,200 of income from federal taxes as long as you are outside of the US for a year. Coming back for a short visit or R&R doesn't invalidate you being outside of the US. California has a safe-harbor rule for CA taxes and you can avoid paying CA income taxes. If you own a house in Ca, you will still have to pay property tax. Also, deduct any moving expenses associated with moving for your job, except those paid by your employer or someone else.

Expatriates are citizens living outside of their country of citizenship for work or other reasons. The OP is still very much a US citizen, unless he's renounced his citizenship, and still has to pay US income taxes.

Thanks for the tip. I knew about the tax situation that was a major part of the reason why I picked up this job. I'm making more tax free then when I was an E-6 in the USAF with all the allowances and whatnot. So I'm saving up and trying to figure what I want to get when I get back....the list is long and complicated. I got a few months to narrow it down(like that's gonna happen)
I dont' own a house my family is living stateside in a rental and I will for sure deduct some costs incurred.

OP, if you have renounced your U.S. citizenship then yes, you are going to have issues. One of the questions on the BATFE 4473 form specifically asks if you have ever renounced your citizenship.

Let me be clear. I'm an Expat..I did not renounce my citizenship. I know the consequences of renouncing and that is not a path I want to take.

Your biggest problem may be time. 10day wait, 1new handgun every 30 days. Those can mess you up if you are only visiting
