    Not a firearm, but... rust treatment and preservation options?

    The attached photo is a late 19th cent lock mechanism. There is a fair amount of rust on the steel mechanism. Any suggestions on how I can treat the metal to stop the rust and preserve this mechanism for the future?

          Don't I have to remove the rust first? Is there some sort of acid bath or naval jelly or something that will suck all of the rust out of the pores?

                  Naval jelly or Ospho will treat the steel. But I would not immerse it since there's brass there too.
