Almost got bit last nigh

I was out in the Mojave just south of Kramer Junction, of course I got my truck stuck, AAA truck got stuck so he wouldn't pull me out.I had to wait for my Sister and Nephew to save me. I was hiking up the road towards the 395, sun was down and temp about 55 and I heard it, its a sound I've heard before but not as fast and loud a rattle as this one. Scared the you know what out of me. It was 3+ feet and not happy I was walking up the road he was on.
First thing my sis asks me is "did you shoot it"

Its kind od cold and late for these to be out, isn't it?


Its pretty bad when you pay for AAA premium and they can't help you. All it took was a 4 wheel drive pickup.

Naw, I figure it wasn't bothering anybody. I was stuck out there for 9hrs, this tarantula kept come up to me. I'd shoo it away by kicking dirt on it, it would walk around it a big loop and come right back to where ever I was. I should of shot that thing.

Sometimes they come out if the ground is saturated.

I've only heard that sound once and it sent a chill down my spine. Still gives me the creeps thinking about it.

I got bit once......fang was stuck in my boot but it didn't penetrate the Danner boot I was wearing. The snake was assassinated and grilled later that night.

I would have killed that 3 footer and deep fried it with the cotton tails I got recently.

Perhaps you were sitting on his house?

It's NEVER a good idea to get off the pavement out here unless you are in something with 4WD. I pull people out all the time.

Also a GOOD idea to carry water if you are even just driving through our bit of paradise for just this reason. Weather is cool now but a couple months ago it would have been a lot worse.

I don't worry to much if I have cell service. Last year my son and I camped one night up north of Jaw bone, we were about 10 miles north of the 15 up a dirt road. My son was playing video games all day on his Kendal. loaded up the truck, turned the key and nothing. No cell service up there either

Even on our one day shoots to BLM I have water and food, plus blankets and a couple old pillows. I asked my sis to just let me stay out there the night and come get me this morning. She and my niece were worried about the rain and maybe not being able to get me out this morning

No. My neighbor's dog was bit with a couple inches of snow on the ground.

I have killed a pile of those things in my logging days , but a couple of years ago I met the one that scared the crap out of me. My wife and I were hiking back on road 2 behind Shaver Lake and I stopped to take a leak. All of a sudden as I'm doing my thing an 8 foot timber rattler came swooshing out of the brush right across the tips of my boots and stopped in the middle of the road. Didn't rattle once and just stayed in the road taking up almost the whole width of it. I'll never forget that one as long as I live.
