    Gunfight at the OK Corral

I just watched the 1957 version of Gunfight at the OK Corral with Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas. It seems the shooting stance of the day was to quickly square your feet, pin your gunhand to your hip, look straight at the target and fire! I don't know how they did it. Me? I have to aim. Man, I wish I could shoot like that.

I herd Burt was a anti-POS-lefty gun grabber.

        Good movie.

I like the one with James Garner too.

        Hour of the gun.

He also reprised the role in "sunset" with Bruce Willis.
        Sorry, not sorry.

An entertaining Hollywood movie for sure---BUT, of course, absolutely no actual history/facts, etc.
Somewhere in my cartridge collection, I have a box of old Steimbridge marked "five in one" blank shells from the western movies.
A lot of actors are POS anti-second wackos---many are not...

5 in 1s are still available, we use them for our reenactment events, skits, etc. and true, Hollywood is slightly less than accurate when portraying the cowboy era.

I love old westerns from that period. Just watched the lesser known Fastest Gun Alive with Glenn Ford. Good, old fashioned entertainment! My avatar is Gary Cooper in the Hanging Tree.

They do reenactments there in Tombstone. One year a live round accidentally got left in a gun and a bullet lightly nicked a guy's head. Imagine being an actor in that and feeling something when you're not supposed to feel anything.

There are various organizations that sanction reenactments and to my knowledge, every one of them requires a safety check and the mandate is to never point directly at someone. Some require x number of feet apart as a safety area as well.

                    Someone didn't follow the rules!

Sadly, one of the problems I have seen at various shooting ranges here in Southern California is that it appears the only training many folks have had is watching Hollywood movies and Television shows. I suspect very few script writers and/or actors know much of anything about proper and safe gun handling.

Recently watched a documentary on old west gun fights, and in the film, it stated that Wyatt Earp killed about 10 people in his life. For every kill except one, he aimed with his sights...

Gritting your teeth seemed to help the aim. Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas always seem to grit their teeth when they fire.

In the great but short lived HBO series Deadwood, there were very few gunfights.

                            They used knives.

I think they did about 10 version of Earp/OK corral.
                              I've seen:

                              Wyatt Earp Kevin Costner
                              Tombstone Kurt Russel
                              My Darling Clementine Henry Fonda
Hour of the Gun James Garner
                              Wyatt Earps Revenge Val Kilmer
Life and Legend (TV) Hugh O' Brien
                              Cheyenne Autumn Jimmy Stewart
                              Dodge City (Eroll Flynn)

I remember Jimmy Stewart but forget the movie,
                              EDIT: looked it up

                              Best movie: Tombstone
Best Earp (realistic hard nosed) Russel
                              Best Earp (wimpy) Kevin Costner
                              Best Earp (pizazz) O'Brien
                              Best Earp (likable) Fonda
Best Earp (best acting job) Stewart
