You don't have to prove anything concerning ownership of long guns.

The police can't run a serial number on most long guns owned before 1-1-14,

None were recorded.

I have been reading about people having issues proving they own a gun or lost serial numbers and DROS papers and it got me thinking that their may be some benefit to self-registration.

First not sure why you would have to prove you own a rifle, second, you don't catalog your weapons?

Of course I'd rather not have to pay any fees or deal with the hassle but dose it offer some types of protections should a problem or issue arise with ownership/theft/overzealous enforcement of some kind?

I figured this would be the best place to ask since many here have mulled these types of issues over before. This is pertaining to long guns that were in possession prior to 2014 and not currently registered. (For the record I had a 03 for a while and have registered handguns so the government already knows I have guns).

I had to fill out the form and pay $19 to register some rifles I bought out of state and brought back to CA in 2014. So far, noone's come to confiscate these guns.
