Does anyone have experience with the Coonan 1911 .357 magnum; is it a good/great pistol and what's not so good about it?

First generation or second generation? Are you interested in getting the current model by way of SSE? While I have two of the original versions, I have heard reports that the most recent version carries improvements and betterments that make it run a whole lot more reliable than the older models. I've seen too many reports of those owning both saying the same.
My opinion is that if you can swing it, get the new version via SSE. Less issue with getting magazines, parts, etc. (The old mags are different and no longer made).

It would have to be sse. Thanks.Comment

There was a guy at the CG shoot Friday night that had one. He said he loves it but it's "picky." I never got to have him elaborate.Comment

The Coonan 1911 battles the same issues that ever semi-auto has when chambered for a rimmed cartridge - feeding is always a concern and the action has to be finely tuned to operate reliably, usually operating within a very specific pressure curve.
That said, I've admired them for decades and would love to own one. OP, if you have the means and the appetite for a boutique pistol that can be finicky about ammo, go for it."A vote is like a rifle; it's usefulness depends upon the character of the user." - Theodore RooseveltComment

If the bullet does not kill the bad guy the fireball will definitely burn them to a crisp

Shot one belonging to someone else at the range. It feels weird in the hand especially with my stubby fingers and my brain telling me it should feel like a 1911. Recoil was impressive, fireball was distinct. It's an interesting curiosity but I'm not a big fan.Comment

It's a fun gun. Definitely finicky, but when you lock in on a load/ammo that it likes, it's a blast.Wish I was rich instead of so damn good looking.Originally posted by stix213I'll worry about Hannibal Lecter having too many rights when the rest of us get ours in the first place.Originally posted by Just DaveAny American who isn't on a government watch list should be ashamed of themselves.Comment

I have a pair of the newer ones. While I have not shot either yet, i absolutely love the fit, finish, size, weight, design and packaging. Given the LAR grizzly is out of production, this is the coolest oversized 1911 going. If you have the means, i would not hesitate.
check out the FPS russia with the coonans....
