How far away from a town need one be

Hey all, I live in Apple Valley in the high desert. Obviously this is the BFE of Southern California, good for shooting and not much else. Anyway, how far out of town do I need to be in order to go shoot? I have heard you need only be in unincorporated area but what exactly is that?

    thanks in advance

It's going to vary based on county and municipality. Figure out who law enforcement is for the area in which you wish to shoot. Call them.

BLM land will also vary (at least it does here). Again, a phone call to their local office is a good way to find out.

FWIW, most of the land around Apple Valley is shotgun only. No solid projectiles.

I moved up to Apple Valley about a year ago as well and was looking for similar information without any clear answers. I think I'm just going to join the Apple Valley Gun Club though to make things easier.

Too bad it is not a public range, they would probably get a lot more visitors that way. Anyway, out off of Johnson road there is nothing but dirt and hills and rocks. Also, I know many of my friends go shooting out there.

Never heard of anybody going up there, but I don't really know anybody that goes out shooting up here. I agree about the gun club and wish it was open to the public too, but it seems like it's really cheap to join for access to all the stuff they have to offer. I just think it's such a hassle to have to scavenge for areas to shoot.

Jojitsu, Avdrummerboy, You'll be well advised to head north on 15 past Barstow. Johnson Valley and the road leading down to I-40 are heavily patrolled, especially at this time of year what with hunting season open. The closest place that I would even think of using a rifle is east on Afton Rd.

San Berdo and La Co's are a pain in the butt with their restrictions. About the same distance is kern Co. and Inyokern area. You might consider Lytle Creek or one of the other gun clubs. There's one off of Stoddard Wells Rd just after hwy 18, (D st) and the 15.
