How do in know where I can publicly shoot?

I'm new and don't want to get in any trouble or be unsafe. I would like to sometimes shoot on public land. I read that open carry is legal an so is shooting. I'm talking about handgun target shooting.

How do I know where is legal and where is not? Is all national forest or blm land legal or are there maps of signs or what?

This could be a really long answer depending on where you live. It would help if you can give a general location.

We need more information on your location. What's wrong with a range?

Blanket statements like that are rarely true.
Open carry is still legal, "where discharge of a firearm is not otherwise prohibited" ....

I love in Oregon and bought a boat in California. I also drive back and forth and camp in Northern California sometimes. I was wondering if it was like Oregon where you can shoot on BLM land.

I haven't been to a range yet. They seem like they would be fun but not as fun. There's more people around and it would be really loud. It's somewhat expensive. Ammo is already expensive. Add to that 20-25$ for a range rental and it adds up. Plus, being out in nature is fun.
