    Washoe County NV Shooting Restristion

Anyone see the map from the Washoe County NV Sheriff designating no shooting areas within the County?

    link:

In short, all State & Private owned land, (may include BLM) around Hwy 80 and 395 is no shooting, which covers Boomtown, Verdi, Reno, Lemon Valley, etc. They are even claiming some restrictions into the National Forest around Verdi. After seeing this, my plans for the great exit to Verdi are suspect.

nice map... calls out exactly where houses might be especially those in remote places that almost certainly don't actually have anyone breathing in them. If you look at the map it's not all, just nearly all that's anywhere close to a useful road. There are some spots just outside of town that appear to be on the ok-to-shoot status.

What is interesting to me is the nature of the restrictions. Up here you CAN discharge within x distance of an occupied structure.. WITH owner permission.

Gotta love watching a state turn blue.
...but their exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom.

Come down to Minden. I have the Johnson Lane OHV practically at my doorstep and can be at my favorite shooting spot in 10 minutes. Oh, and you don't have to smog your cars here in Douglas County, either.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

When you compare their map to Google Earth, you are correct in that they have outlawed most everywhere there is vehicle access, such as a Jeep trail. In looking at areas south of 80 near the boarder, I see they have dedicated larger areas as Open Space, and declared as Congested Areas, meaning no shooting.

I was on Zillow looking around Minden, Gardnerville, and the areas near Carson off 50. A google search of these areas did not reveal any alarming target practice restrictions. Interesting to note that one site listed Carson City as prohibiting ammo, powder, and primer storage in your home without a permit from the Fire Department.

Surprisingly, Reno is actually a poor place to go shooting. There is only one indoor range in town and the public outdoor range is pretty far out of town. Once you get outside of Washoe County, the options really open up.

Reno is also a lame place to live. Why anyone would relocate there baffles me.

Sounds like so cal. We have 2 or 3 designated shooting areas on BLM land.

Got a friend that lives on the south side of Minden, Gardnerville. Go south to the 7-11 then left towards the dump. once past the houses take the dirt road on the left and go past the model airplane field.

You can't surf and ski in the same day so it must suck. I have heard ads from the visitor's bureau; ski and golf the same day. I don't surf or golf but water and snow skiing are great.

I was told by a friend that lives there that it is against the law to shoot within one mile of any house. I don't know if it is true.

True. Washoe County has an ordinance prohibiting shooting in "congested areas". You can get a map off their website. The restriction shuts down much of the county to shooting.
