And yes, our ship was boarded by the USCG while I was in the Navy, but we made them do it the hard way...

I watched, listened in on coast guard training of boarding and dealing with combative crew. Interesting to watch. Kevlar, M-16, Hand guns, o.c.spray. And how to deal with different vessels.
The feeling I got was that the coast guard treats every vessel the same. And if their are firearms on board they will secure them. I have never personally delt with the C.G. Other than work. But I have been boarded by Fish and game.
First question any firearms on board? Yes. ok where ok we will secure it.
        And game on board?
        Lets see paper work.
        Life jackets?
        Fire exstinguisher?
Leave firearm on dash untill we are past that point.
Have a nice day. Stay safe officers.

            Quick points of fact:

The Coast Guard is a law enforcement agency.

CG personnel possess statutory law enforcement authority.

Not every CG member performs law enforcement duties. There's a whole bunch of other mission areas.

The members that do perform law enforcement training complete an academy that is more extensive than many police academies in the country (although not up to California POST standards).

There is quite a bit of case law upholding the CG's ability to conduct inspectional boardings. There hasn't been a specific case that I'm aware testing the ability to disarm mariners as a safety precaution, but given the context of other court rulings, I don't foresee an adverse ruling on a test case.

Many Calgunners have advocated simply saying "no" when asked if there are any firearms in your vehicle (same point for vessels). That would be a major mistake. Unlike making a false statement to a state LEO, making a false statement to a CG LEO would could easily result in felony charges under 18USC1001.

Everyone I know who boats on the Sacramento River and the Delta goes armed. No kidding, there are actual pirates out there who will toss you in the river and steal your boat. There are also plenty of drug runners and other scary types.

And I say again, everyone I know who boats on the Sacramento River and the Delta goes armed.

As to the Coast Guard, rule # 7 applies. Be nice, be courteous, just as long as they are too.
