    Ammo storage in safe?

I have always stored my ammo in the same safe as my firearms. I recently read a subject on gun safes and mentioned not to store ammo in the gun safe. In case of fire, the ammo may cook off from the temperatures and do more damage with the contents. One of the storage containers recommended for ammo was the job box type. It's not fireproof, but good on security and I have one. I'm looking to see where others store their ammo.
I was also thinking about where to store my powder. Currently, it's just in a metal file cabinet. Probably wouldn't be a good idea to put the powder and ammo in the same job box!

If you're concerned about the temp inside your safe to "cook off" rounds to damage the contents, then:
    1. You're watching too many movies (search you tube for the tests)
    2. At that temp, everything else inside your safe has already been destroyed or extensively damaged by the heat.

also, if you have enough room in your safe for ammo, you don't have enough guns or ammo

I prefer to minimize ammo in the safe. If a pro burglar gets in he'll have both your gun AND ammo. That's not a good thing in my estimation.
Job boxes, truck boxes, ammo cans, locking filing cabinets, linen closets, even non working freezers with locking doors are all good for storing ammo---I want a constant, cool, dry environment.
Powder goes on a shelf, un confined and in it's original container.

Put the 22lr in the safe, no one will bother trying to steal the rest of your stockpile.

This! This! This! Folks need to prepare for the next panic so we are spared the suffering mewling on these boards of "I can't find ammo anywhere!"

If you can fit your ammo in the safe, you are woefully unprepared. Think "pallet", two year minimum. You'll thank me later.

Personally, I would store them separate but just for organizational reasons. Sure, if I had a walk in safe or something massive then why not? Right now I'm watching craigslist for a locking cabinet I can buy off someone for $20 to store my ammo.

Well, this is one of the reasons I'm considering moving my ammo to the job box. I need more room in the safe.

I thought the general consensus is to have at least twice the amount of storage space for ammo than firearms.

                        No?

I store them together, but I'm currently out of room...

Don't put large amounts of ammo in a safe. A couple of ready magazines is fine, but the bulk of your ammo should be in proper containers -- like ammo cans.

Virtually all gun safes have marginal fire protection to begin with. The last thing you want is to load it up with yet another source of flammable material. If one round cooks off, odds are good it'll start a chain reaction, and turn the safe into an oven (if not a very large grenade).

This is the advice I've gotten from experts. Check yourself if you like.
