    Wind drift on 223 remington

Wife and I were at Los Altos today shooting our AR, it was really windy. The wind was blowing from the target's right side and I've noticed that my shots were drifting about 2 to 2.5 inches to the left on the 100 yards lane.

I was using 55grn 223rem today and shooting with a 16 inch barrel with 1:9 twist. Ammo used was cheap Federal 223rem 100 bulk pack from Walmart and some PMC bronze.

Unfortunately, I didn't have any means of measuring the wind speed and is wondering what kind of wind speed would produce this sort of drift on a 55grn 223rem bullet at 100 yards? Thanks.

Well, @2700fps (my chrono'd reloads from 16" barrel), my ballistics table says 0.6" of drift from a 5mph wind @90 degrees. So, I'd estimate your wind at between 15-20 mph.

Livermore was a problem today as well due to the wind. Livermore wind is known to swirl and quickly change direction. I felt like I wasted about $50.00 worth of ammo.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

What waste? Practicing to shoot in the wind will make you a better shooter.

              Your looking at 10+.

You should go to your local homedepot and get some construction ribbon. I started using those as wind markers and it's a very cheap way to track wind. I don't have the funds or the time to shoot LR often enough to justify a nice Krestel but the ribbons once you learn how they act work wonders!

I agree, but at Livermore the wind continually changes in strength and direction. At the shooting bench it might be westerly and the target it could be northerly. They don't have flags to judge it with.
