    Gun Kote or Duracoat?

Looking to paint some parts on a few rifles and wondering what would be best for my needs?

    Resist rust under the paint.
    Chip resistant
    Ease of application
    durability

    Thanks

I'm thinking about sending a couple a rifles to get refinished. If your gonna do any refinishing yourself. Prep is #1 No oil ,grease ,residue, nothing should be on the surface that is being treated. From what i've read also a fresh park job will help the applied finish stick.

        gun cote is paint

        Duracote is Epoxy.

yes, dura over fresh park does make for a better finish- being that there is a permanent finish beneath the NEARLY permanent finish on top. Park comes in 1 color, duracote comes in like ...200.

I use Duracote. I have done 7 or 8 rifles for my self and friends. I have also coated a couple of my pistols. It is easy to apply and very durable.

kg gun kote is not necessarily paint. it is a ceramic coating, its really tough. i have used it on a trigger frame on a paintball marker. it seems quite resistant to scratches, and they say nothing short of sanding/ sand blasting will remove it. you can rub it down with acetone if you want, after it has been cured in an oven of course.

i have no experience with dura coat though.

I have used Duracoat on a couple weapons of mine before with great success, but I have never used gun coat. Can gun coat be applied over parkerizing or should the frame it's being applied to be blasted first.

I had some Duracoat work done via ArmoryAirbrush.com and am very pleased with it. They even have some very high heat resistant kind

I just duracoated a lower. It came out GREAT. I'd never used an airbrush before, but my Harbor Freight $15 special worked great.

I didn't touch it for 2 weeks, give it time to cure. The finish looks good, and will hopefully hold up for years.

                  Magpul FDE color FTW!

actually, duracoat is paint, and gun kote is a thermally cured resin

I honestly prefer duracoat. I have used both. I know how hard it is to remove duracoat or to scratch it, chip it, or do anything to it!

The biggest reason I use duracoat is colors...It holds up and has a better variety to choose from.

Some one requested pics...here are a few and you can click my signature and see more.

here you can see what the barrel looked like at the top and the Duracoat that was laid over it, bottom.

                        Some tips.

Perperation is key. Make sure to follow instructions on Prep.

Airbrushes are for the "hobbyist" step your game up if you plan to use Duracoat a lot. Duracoat is a beast...it will terrorize airbrushes.

This is the 1911 I duracoated.

For being my beater 1911, it's holding up great. It rides in a kydex holster and has a bit of wear neat the edges on the slide, and a bit on the grip safety which wasn't parked prior to spraying, it was stainless. Here's how it looks now:

Overall she's still pretty, I'm still pleased, and it's holding up well to the abuse, including my truck door being slammed shut on me due to high winds in BLM territory. I just snagged the duracoat starter kit, included a spray brush that worked well enough for the weekend I sprayed everything.

And yes, as mentioned earlier, prep is key.

So the verdict apears to be that duracoat is the best do-it-yourself gun coat. Especially when a bead blaster isn't available. Honestly, I have not carried my P229 enough for it to get wear. When Duracoat wears from a holster, does it chip? or does it wear like most other finishes do? As in wearing thin on the edges and what not.

It most definately does not chip. Not so long as it's prepped properly and you give it proper time to cure anyways.

Look at mine at the corners of the front of the slide. You can just barely make out a bit of wear in the first pic.
