I am in the market for a new rifle and went down to the L.G.S. to browse. They had one of my top picks to rent so I figured I would put some rounds downrange to see how I liked it. Since I was alone and unarmed when I went in the store they would not allow me to rent a rifle. Said I either had to be with somebody else or have my own gun as well to rent theirs. I will reserve judgement on that, but my question is, has anyone ever heard of that policy before?

Gun rental question

It's fairly common for gun ranges to not rent to a single individual unless they are very well known and established customers. The reason? Gun rental suicides. There have been quite a few gun ranges who have had folks rent guns and kill themselves. The idea is that a person is far less likely to attempt to kill themselves if they brought a friend along."A vote is like a rifle; it's usefulness depends upon the character of the user." - Theodore RooseveltComment

Same policy at my range unless you have a CCW permit.Comment

The only place I know of that doesn't have this policy (that I know of) is where I used to work, at Oak Tree (unless they've changed it but I doubt it).VMI '11

If you are alone and don't have a firearm then most places will not rent to you.
If you bring in your own firearm you can rent an additional one. I've done this a few times at Reed's. As long as you have your own gun you can rent another.Originally posted by Citadelgrad87It's one thing to question everything . . . Huh... odd. I've never rented a gun before but I've been to lots of places that do rent them and I've never seen a sign or overheard an employee saying anything. I didn't even know this existed until about a week ago I saw someone else complaining about it on another site. Wherever that was would rent to lone women but not lone men.
Maybe we should sue for discrimination?

Why should we sue them ? All range homicide are done by lone male.Huh... odd.
