    Standalone suppressor-ish device legality?

Would it be legal to have a fixed (like tripod mounted) device that is separate from the firearm that you could shoot through to reduce and/or redirect the noise? Let's say a person wanted to do some backyard pest control but didn't want to disturb his neighbors. Could this person make a suppressor-like device that is in no way is attachable to the gun and is it's own free standing entity without violating any federal or state laws? (assuming location, gun, target species, etc, is all perfectly legal)

    Edit:
I noticed that on the ATF website is says "portable firearm" in the definition of suppressor. Could you have a gun mounted to a post sticking out of a concrete slab in the ground with a suppressor on it that is chained to the post so that even if you removed the gun the suppressor couldn't go with it?

if any democrat 'thinks' that your firearm 'might' be even a little bit quieter, its a silencer and illegal

i would seriously doubt that if you have a backyard, where you already have a desire or feel the need to 'not disturb' your neighbors, you probably are in a place where its illegal to discharge anyway, check local ordinanace for firearms and noise, it could even be unlawful to discharge a bb gun

I am, that's why I use a pellet gun. This is purely theoretical.

sorry, modified original to include bb guns, lol
nice idea though, (thinking outside the box) to have it be not attached to firearm, used for silencing

It's done a lot but in the city I would think it to be a bad idea but in the Country,Desert regions I know lots of people who use such a device for target practice on their properties most are constructed with insulated 55 gallon steel barrels welded together usually two to three in line.

              Per BATFE...
If the muzzle device lowers the firearm's sound signature by 1 db, then it is a Title 2 Silencer/Noise Suppressor.

Noise suppressors on BB/pellet guns are legal if they are permanently attached to the BB/pellet gun.

Detachable BB/pellet gun noise suppressors are considered Title 2 Silencer/Noise Suppressors and require BATFE approval to legally make/acquire/possess.

Back to the theoretical device... let's say you have a tube of some sort on a tripod and you shoot your gun through it, even slide your barrel into it (not touching) and it quiets the report - are you good?

No you are not good. If the device is not fixed to the gun , how can you insure you won't shoot the device?

Yeah but it's not a muzzle device if it's not attached... right? And the only reason a removable pellet gun suppressor is illegal is because you might maybe could be able to put it on a real gun. Again, coming back to it being attached at the muzzle...

You make the hole big enough to shoot through. Yes, it will lower the device's effectiveness, but it's a worth while tradeoff IMO.

Big enough to block your sights?

If it is not tight on the muzzle it will leak gas and noise. Not to mention the chance of shooting it making for a shrapnel launcher.

I have heard of people mounting large numbers of old tires in a chute like fixture and then shooting through the hole in the middle as a way of reduce the acoustic signiture

It's apparently fairly effective at keeping noise complaints to a minimum
